taking time off

i've been liftin for about 2.5 years... this past summer i kinda slacked off a little bit but other than that i've been pretty dedicated to the gym. i was wondering if you guys think it's good to take off time at all while liftin. I dont really want to but if it'll help my progress i will. just wanted to hear some people's personal experience with this one.

I like to give the body a rest every now and again, renews my motivation lets me catch up on sleep and lets the joints rest for awhile.

It seems like most people take an entire week of every 3-6 months depending on their training, genetics, etc. I usually wait until my gains start to diminish. If changing my routine doesn't alleviate the problem, then I take a week off.

I have also seen people incorporating deloading periods into their training. This means that for a week or two they do a very low intensity workout. This is something in between rest and continued lifting.

I would say from what I have read, that taking a week or two off can do wonders, especially if your strength training. Bryan Haycock (HST) does what is known as "strategic deconditioning" for two weeks which supposedly "resets" the muscle.

I started taking time off from lifting when I did HST and it made a big difference in making gains for me. From reading a lot of medical reports and opinions I have began to realize that it also allows a lot of other things besides muscle to recover, like the kidneys, liver, reseptors and CNS. I now take 1 week off every 9 - 12 weeks and then I take 2 weeks off at least 3 times per year.
