How to appropriately choose your training regimen

Just getting into the personal training business, I really want to be a break from the norm as far as a typical personal trainier. Ever since I was about 15 or so, Ive gotten so much bad advice from these so called "experts", that I probably could write a book on things NOT to do when working out. Most of the personal training certifcates I have examined are jokes. No question about it. If you can read a book, take a multiple choice test, and shell out about 400$ bucks, you can become an "official" personal trainer in almost any gym. The sad thing is that most of the trainers (at least that I know, and see) are ignorant and over-confident in their abilities to change almost anyone into a bodybuidling legend.

Well, getting off my soap box, I have decided that along with my certification (which Im only getting because you need it to work in most gym's), I am going to do my best to personalize each program for the indivdual needs of that person, which of course is what any good personal trainer would do, but so many really don't. So, I made a list of training aspects that can be used universally to help choose a program that is good for you.

1. First, choose a gym location that is within reason. If your gym or fitness center is not at a comfortable distance, it will give you an excuse to miss the days when your not really "in the mood" to workout. This is especially critical when first starting a routine, because you need to learn the discipline of sticking with it.

2. Make a list of your goals. Start with that day. Then a month. Then 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and a year. Writing down what you want to accomplish will help you not only stick with the day ahead of you, but over time, you will be able to see your progress, and it can help you see if your doing something that is working properly, or if you need to change something. Try to record as much about each day in a daily diary of some kind. The more info you put down, the better you can see what works and what doesnt work.

3. Choose a program that works, but also one you ENJOY. I dont care how great or wonderful a certain training program is, if you really dont enjoy it in some way or another, then more than likely not going to put 100 percent effort into it day in and day out. Now this IS NOT to say that you need to love going to the gym all the time. NO. Some days will be better than others, but overall you should have a positive attitude and look forward to getting to work. I have found out from personal experience that if I look forward to my workouts, they are more productive than if I wasnt enjoying them. Of course, results have a lot to do with how much I "enjoy" a program, and that should have a lot to do with your decision as well.

4. Look up as many different programs as you can before you decide what your going to do. They have TONS of great training programs that have worked for many people. Compare each program to your schedule, your goals, and make the decision.

5. Dont be afraid to experiment. Each person reacts differently to different exercises. Some things work better than others. Dont be afraid to try something new, a different exercise, a few more/less sets, or adding some cardio on a day when you didnt do it before. Watch your body, see how you feel and make your judgement call. However, if you do this, write it down, and try to use it more than a few weeks in a row to see how your body reacts over time.

6. Life outside the gym will make you what you are INSIDE the gym. Nutrition, lifestyle, family and work all have a major impact on your health and body. If even one of these is neglected, then it can severely impact your body in a negative way. Be well balanced and do become obsessed with the gym. Make sure your getting plenty of rest, proper nutrition and your family and work life are in order and you will be a succsess in the gym as well.

7. Dont rush results. Anything worth doing is worth taking sacrifice, effort and time for. Dont expect to be an overnight sensation, and remember, your body makes its most dramatic changes over time, not overnight.

8. Be committed. Without committment, you will be wasting my time and yours.

9. Last but not least, READ. The more you know, the better your chances at sucsess.

I made a list similar to this to give to my clients to give them a good understanding of what it takes and what to expect from working out, getting in shape, and making a life long committment to achieving excellence in their lifestyle.
