    10" squats are stupid!

I'm cutting and extremely weak, but I do 20 rep squats 1 X a week. My ass goes to the floor, but the weight I use for 20 makes me look like a puss. Most guys in my gym do a half ass squat thing 10-12" down with impressive wieght. I don't think they could do 1/3 that weight deep squatting.

Well as long as you're doing it right...ALWAYS ass to grass! Only way to do squats! Sometimes I do parallel squats, though, box squats, because it's easier in the lower back and I recover faster from them...I do this when I want to train legs twice that week, which is rare, but done to throw some variety in my routine. I always do full front squats and one-legged squats in my routine as well.

I'm one of the BIGGEST advocates of full ROM and 'feeling' the muscle/developing mind-muscle connection. Concentrating ont he muscle, form and range of motion will give you MUCH better results than trying to power the weight up, using crap form, restricting your ROM and cheating yourself, even if it means that you have to use very light weights to achieve these conditions.

    Peace.

I agree that full range of motion is the way to go. Full squats only for me.

Who cares what everyone else is doing!!!

I am a real asshole when it comes to full range of motion. I will embarrass the shit out my clients if they don't move through a full range of motion and I will embarass the shit out of other trainers when we are working out if they are doing half reps. I will scream shit like let's go squat all the way!! What are we doing squats or curtizes you panzie. Usually people get the point. My clients know that on the bench press if they don't touch their chest they will get emarassed because I will be yelling "DON
T MAKE ME SAY IT!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! DON'T MAKE ME SAY IT!!.......TOUCH YOUR CHEST!!!"

Full ROM is the only way to train. Don't worry about the weight you are throwing around compared to others because all you have to do is realize that you are much stronger than they are through a full range of motion.

You are not forced to make a choice...

Be creative. Do sessions with parallel squats. Do sessions with below parrallel squats.

Remember, Quadricep muscle activation is significantly greater slightly above parallel than going under parallel where the gluteus is heavily engaged. However you get a good stretch by going under parrallel.

I am not going to choose one type of squat over another. They are both in my arsenal of waepons!

Dude, when we used to work together you would never come to the gym with me. Why don't you come into the city on day and train with me on a saturday?

OK, by "ass to the floor" you can't actually mean going ALL the way down till your ass hits the floor??? Every tutorial or anything I have ever read about sqats says that you shouldn't put your legs beyond a 90 degree angle.

I get full ROM, but my body won't let the bar touch my chest because my forearms are too long. I can't squat until my ass touches my ankles because my legs are too damn long. I hope you take these limitations into consideration when you train your clients.

    Depends. Hpw tall are you?

I have a client that is 6'2" that squats deep as hell!

My best freind is 6'2" and he squats ass to the grass also. When we workout together we have to put a box down for me to stand on jsut to un-rack the weight and then I have to walk down to start my reps. Becomes a real bitch when you get over 300lbs. I hate being short.

Yes, I take everything into consideration when I train my clients. I am no dumbass. Some people need to work with in a limited range of motion so that is what we have to do.

I'm 6'2", but almost 50% of that is in legs. I can squat deep when doing fronts, but never as deep when doing backs. My knees end up in front of my toes.

I'm 5'11", and I have very long limbs as well, but I honestly believe that ANYONE can develop depth in the squat. All it takes is the strengthening of the posterior chain, practice and emphasis on proper form.

who cares if you knees go past your toes. That is a myth that they can't. Honestly you probably can get really deep as a lot of it is in your form, bar placment and how you manage your upper body during the decent.

Be carefull doing "crunch" squats. It puts a hella lot of strain on the knee ligaments. A few physical therapists I know recommend against this practice even for the fit individuals.

My favorite for lack of ROM is watching people do preacher curls. The whole point of it is to isolate and get full ROM, arms all the way out. Then I see these guys using way too much weight with their shoulders hanging way low and only taking the bar to 90 degrees. They get about a full 60 degrees of motion considering their shoulders are so low, and basically only serve to work their lower back a little to rock the weight back up. What a joke. But I'm not one to say anything to them, to each his own I guess.... These are the same guys that go on some pro hormone cycle after being at the gym for 6 weeks and not seeing any results. Gee, I wonder why!?

    /end rant
