    Unhappy Dumbell lunges

I can't do these very good because a knee injury, I don't feel very stabilized when I do them.I can do squats, leg curls, leg extensions and calf exercises. What I'm looking for is an exercise to isolate the butt as much as possible.

You are doing the right exercise.Keep doing them.Lunges feel awkward because they are a form of unilateral training. That is, training one limb at a time. This forces all of the stabilizer muscles to kick in and it works almost every muscle from your waist down. These hit my glutes like no other exercise. As a matter of fact, last week while doing them, my left glute cramped up from the strain and I had to dump the bar.Needless to say, everyone in the immediate area had a good laugh at my expense.Anyway, stay with them. They are a very beneficial exercise IMO.

    SKINSFAN,
Try barbell lunges instead. They may provide you a bit more stability and control. I find I'm able to keep my back more vertical with the barbell rather than the dumbbells.

I agree with ballast to a point, lunges are excellent for the butt no other exercise compares when it comes to hitting that area. But if you have or have had knee problems then they can be more of a hindrance!

You never specified what kind of dumbbell lunges you do but don't do walking lunges. These are great but they put allot of pressure on the knee, especially if unconsciously you are letting the knee go past the toe.

What I would suggest is to try standing backward lunges. Since you are going backwards instead of forwards, the chances of going beyond the toe drop significantly!

If lunges are just too much for your knees, maybe your gym has a butt blaster machine. I've used this machine and it does work if you are in proper alignment. Another thing you can do is if your gym has a straight leg press you can crouch down so you are in a simi squat position and have your chest against the back rest of the seat. Then put 1 leg on the platform of the press and kick your leg back . This is also very effective, but don't do a whole lot of weight with this because then you start to feel it in your lower back. Good luck!

I've always had knee problems and when I started doing lunges, they started acting up again. So - I don't do them anymore.

But I tell ya, my butt is killing me today cuz yesterday I did squats!!

Also, my gym has the BUTT BLASTER - it's a really silly looking machine but I'm sure it's pretty good.

lunges are effective, but there are others...

try deep squats, if you can do them.

I don't do this, but you could try one of those hip machines if you have access to one.
