    Training hard over age 35

Any expirienced oldies have any secrets for training over 35?

    More/less weight?
    More/less reps?
    Reccomended supplements?
    Intensity, calories, rest, etc....
Or do all the principals stay the same no matter what age?

I know our test level isn't what it used to be

I look at Ronnie Coleman and he's a big inspiration for the over 35 group.

I've been reading up on the HST routine here on the forums and I think I'll give it a try. Not looking to get as big as Ronnie but still want to pack on the muscle. I have a routine layed out that's pretty hard core, just seeing if there's any other oldies here with some expirience and info. I've been lifting long enough not to be a newbie, but always looking for idea's. Been lurking here on the boards for some time now and have learned tons already.
    Thanks.

I'm not over 35( I am 32 )But I think the intensity should stay the same as it was when you were younger. The thing I notice the the most is my flexability and recuperation ability is not what it use to be.Also I gain fat very easy. Not sure if that has anything to do with age though.

    DEF,

I'm a little over 35 (ALMOST 49( ) and I think i have made some excellent gains using the Burn the Fat , Feed the Muscle theories that are available through this site.

I'm using weights just as heavy if not heavier than I did WAY back when and have less bodyfat than I did when i was in my late 20's.

41 here. I've been working out for 21 years and don't see a difference. When I'm too old to drive myself to the gym I'll just do dips on my walker.

35 is by no means old. Most of the top Natural Pro bodybuilders are in there late 30's early 40's. I think you'll find a lot better info in Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness rather than looking to guys like Ronnie. Just train hard and eat right and you'll get results. The eating is more important than the training. Good luck.

I'm 40 and have been training heavy for going on 4 years. I don't recoup like I did at 25, but it's still the same. Use good form and listen to your body. Same things still apply, eat properly and get plenty of rest. I've found some of the new PH's work wonders!

I turned 40 last October. I was in a blue funk for about 3 months but now I'm back on track.

I agree with dg806 about recovery time getting longer. I guess we just need to throw away those 5 day per week workout schedules. I'd be surprised if I ever get back to that level but you never know.

I work one body part per week. Seems to be OK for now.

Lower Testosterone levels in 40+ year olds could contribute to early plateaus.

In general, Supplements are overrated. JMHO.

It always boils down to listen to your body and give it what it needs. If you eat right get enough rest (both differ from person to person) you will progress. Just take the time to find what works for you in training, nutrition, rest, supplements, ect.. There are no answere that work for everyone.

Ronnie coleman is a great inspiration for guys over 35?

ronnie coleman has more test pumping through him than a 20 year old because he sticks it in his ass several times a day...if you want to go that route and turn your body into a chemistry set go for it.

I say 35,40,50...is all PRIME TIME!....work hard, eat right, stay natural and you will not only look great but you will actually be healthy....ronnie coleman is far from healthy.

Most people 10 years younger than you are fat and lazy, eat alot of shitty food, drink and smoke....live a healthy lifestyle and you will be "young" alot longer than most people!
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

With all the juice, who knows how long Ronnie Coleman will even live. Some people can do that, some people can't.

Ya I guess Ronnie is just a big pile of illegal Test. I don't know to much about that "juice" stuff though.
But WOW, thanks for all the insight from everyone. I didn't know there were so many here..... and I see some pretty exprirenced leaders on the board here that answered with good solid advice. Now that's inspiration.

I guess I'll just keep hitting the weights hard. I'm gonna get this HST routine started. I think I'll like it cause I don't have to lift everyday and I lOVE compound exercises.
I see alot of you just simply train hard and eat healthy no matter what age. My big problem is diet. Gotta get that under control! Not enough good stuff, to much bad stuff. And I do like my beer

I'm 34. What I noticed as soon as I hit my thirties was that pain cannot be ignored, and neither can form. In my twenties (teens don't count, since I wasn't actually doing anything athletic in my teens...) I could do anything, lift anything any old how, any twinge went away.

Now I have to stretch for twenty minutes or so before I lift, or I pay for it. If a couple of my "old injuries" start bitching quietly, I have to listen and get off them for a while, or I pay for it. Glucosamine/chondroitin is now my very good friend.

Roids can be tollerated by some people. Heck, Arnnie and Lou don't have any health problems related to their roid use and they did many many many cycles.

But, if you have those bad genes that cannot handle the roids you will regret taking them later on. I know of 2 people that died from liver cancer related to roid use. Not worth it, vanity sucks.

Rember Arnold's heart surgery a couple of years ago? Probably due to the juice.

I'm 36 and have been lifting for a few years now on and off, started using creatine about 3 years ago and have seen great results, also use Whey and ALA. I have never felt better in my whole life. I lift 6 days a week, heavy first split, medium second split, and have no injuries.

Get this...in 1998 I was diagnosed with a ruptured disc between the c5 c6 vertabrae, I was getting predizone injections in my neck every 6 to 9 months for the excruciating pain. After I started lifting (light at first) I haven't had a shot in years and never get sick, no colds, flus..nothing it's great and I feel better than I did when I was 20. Keep on Keepin on

41 here and have been lifting for 11 years. I'll echo what dg806 said about recovery, make sure you give your body enough time to recover between workouts. You should be able to do more work every time you step into the gym. That may only mean one more rep, but that's stronger than you were last time. I'll also add that us old fogies need to be extra aware of proper form. Our joints are as young and reliliant as those whiper-snappers out there and we need to protect them at all costs. (Speaking as a recent knee surgery recoverer.) Take it slow and easy, when you're lifting weight you're LIFTING WEIGHTS. You're NOT in a race. Remember, it's now how much you're lifting, it's how you're lifting it.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

Being 48, I feel the need to chime in. 35? Shiat, you're a kid!

I can honestly say I am stronger now then at any point in my life. As an older trainer, you definitely need to have more recovery time. I've been training for 13 years and the biggest thing I notice is I must reduce the amount of movements and volume for each body part, compared to when I first started (at 35 ). Two, at the most three exercises per bodypart is the norm, and stick to the compound movements. I mainly keep inside the 4-8 rep range, with the exception of squats where reps in the 8-20 range work well (for me anyway).

Get plenty of sleep, eat well, and you'll be rockin'!

train smart, eat right, when you decide to heavy use your brain, its not like it was 15 yrs ago when you could recoupe quicker, i'm 40 but i'm just a big kid when it comes to the weight room, i like to have some fun, but i'm just smarter about now. diet is a big thing when we get older, pizza tends to stay on the waist line longer.

The only difference I find between now (36) and when I was younger was the type of food I eat. It affects my body a lot differently now. I used to get away with fast food day in and day out. Can't do that no more at 36. Training wise I think I am better off now because I've tried what works and what doesn't work for my body type and genetics.

I'm 35 now and have been training for 11 years, and what ive found the biggest difference from being in my 20's is, not eating healthy means its harder to get the fat off! When I was in my 20's i could get away with eating fast food and still be able to hold a good build. But thats all changed now, since i've reached my 30's I need to eat better and STRETCH alot more.
