what to do first...bulk or cut?

im currently at about 13% BF and cant see my abs and i want mroe definition in the rest of my body as well. As well i want to get bigger. Would it be easier to bulk then lose the fat or cut then start bulking?

I'd rather be at 240 and a fat fuck than at 180 and shredded.

bulk first! It's the better choice!
But it would deppend on how much do you weight!
if you are considerously light you should bulk, always! if you are heavy, you can cut or you can bulk to gain extra lean mass!

I think that cutting is only for big guys! Not only, but you will just look better with lean big body than with a lean tiny body!

okay i just realized something...noone can really answer that question for you. Its something you need to decide for yourself. Whats more important being big (overall, because i'm fairly big now but if i cut i would wind up being skinny) or being cut. I live in NY so being cut isn't so important for me as i don't go to the beach too often and even if i do its only for like 2-3 months out of the year.

i only weigh about 135 right now and im about 5'6. Im not sure how accurate my BF is because i used my home scale that does a bodyfat reading on it. I want to be able to see more definition as well as add some size.

If you are just starting out, eating healthier foods, will casue you to loose some of that fat, or atleast maintain, while on a bulking diet. Unless ofcourse you just go crazy...lol

if you only way 135 don't cut just eat healthy and lift to gain weight, you will be losing fat weight while gaining muscle weight

@135 I would definetly reccomend bulking first

Just eat better to keep your BF% lower.Trying to get cut at 135 is not a good idea.Make sure your diet is spot on and you`ll gain good quality muscle while retaining some shape as well.Spot on nutrition is imperative to looking good.Too many beginners want to get cut when they don`t have the necessary size.Be patient,it`s a lifestyle not a race.Everything in it`s own time! Good luck.

I've been lifting for over two years now, but im just now getting real serious about it. I used to wrestle so i have never had a problem cutting the weight, but bulking up for me is something i have never really done. Thanks for all of the advice!!!

I always think it is better to bulk first. One, because bulking takes a lot longer and is a lot harder than cutting. Two, because once you have bulked you have additional muscle mass that greatly increases your metabolism. Therefore, cutting will become easier with all that extra muscle mass. Also, your muscles are defined at higher body fat percentages if you have more muscle mass.

In your case, bulking is an absolute must. You only weigh 135 at 5'6". Get some meat on those bones!

I would probably bulk, but if you like you can get down to 8-10%, see your abs for the summer, and then work on bulking later.

Why would you want to cut at 135? To see the striations of your bones? Bulk and lift heavy, pack some meat on then cut.

I concur with this statement. If your a bit flabby right now, that fat isn't serving any purpose for you and you don't need it around. If you follow a sensible diet and train hard it is possible to cut bodyfat and increase muscle mass at the same time. The thing is, if you decide that you want to be ripped well that is a different story and a whole nother ball game. That would require extensive cardio as well as a cut in daily calories. My suggestion is to do the 1st thing at this point. get the BF down to a point where if you decide it's time to cut that you don't have to cut for an extensive period of time or worse yet one of those drastic weight loss programs.
