When you start burning muscle for fuel.

Unfortunately, this came from the article about the death of the inventor of the Power Bar (Heart attack, 51, yesterday?). The article states that he invented the bar because he ran out of energy towrds the end of marathons. It said that after mile 21, the body runs out of carbs and begins burning muscle for fuel.

Makes you wonder how worried you should be about losing muscle when cutting. I KNOW they have little muscle, but the point isn't how much muscle you have, its that a body does not start burning muscle until a point no bodybuilder reaches (do you run marathons?). Anyway, I would love to believe this, so I could get busy cutting & burning like an animal, instead of coming home after hard lifting and HIT, blabbering "hope I'm not losing muscle," as I drink my tuna and flax seed shake. Pathetic.

I WANT TO STOP WORRING AND GO BALLISTIC!

Not true at all, however keep in mind those people dont have a surpluse of muscle to begin with. If you were a bodybuilder attempting a marathon, then you can rest assured the body would do what it could to adjust in a quick fashion to make the running easier on you. If you dont keep up with your protein intake through the day, you will lose muscle. On a cut, if you remove calories too quickly, you will also shrink.

I'm starting to think that most non competitive bodybuilders (me) are so afraid of losing muscle that they control their workouts and eat a bit too much when cutting, and fail to reach their goals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 5% is no man's land...I can name only a couple of guys I know that have made it.

The funny thing is, not eveybody can gain 100 lbs of muscle in 5 years, but everyone can get to 5 % BF if their willing to go beyond anything they can imagine...its the fear of muscle loss that holds us all back! A frightened bodybuilder... friggin embarassing!

Much more dangerous things can happen aside from your muscles being "eaten". When my body was eating away at my glycogen storage my blood sugar level also dropped to an EXTREME low and I passed out at a powerlifting meet. As long as you're keeping a regular healthy diet with at least some carbs you should have no problem though. I was pretty much starving myself to make weight which really isn't the way to do it.

Back in High School I had to drop 5 lbs real quick to make my weight class for a wrestling match that was happening the next day. The coach told me not to eat anything for 24 hours, then made me run in one of those sweat suits. I thought i was going to faint. I did make my weight class,But had no energy what so ever to compete.Lets just say, I did not do very good that day...

Most of them, football coaches anyway, are trying to be the next Vince Lombardi or Bear Bryant...
