who can diagnose shoulder pain
I think I hurt it doing forced reps on incline bench. The pain is near the insertion point of my medial or anterior delt and doesn't constantly hurt. If I rise my arm all the way up that's when I usually feel the pain, like if I was doing side lateral rises and went all the way up. It also hurts on my warm up set of bench (135) but I can do a couple reps at 285 relativley pain free?
It also hurts sometimes when doing heavy curls (curls?)or sleeping on my right side especially if my arm is up above my head. Today I waxed my car and couldn't use my right arm due to shoulder pain. It seems to hurt most (usually) when full extended or fully contracted but not usually anywhere in beteween. I'm not a puss, and can work through the pain, the concern I have is causing perm. damage. I took 10 days off and since then have been lifting at about 50% intensity trying to maintain but loosing. I don't want to take a month off (or more) and loose everything I worked so hard for. The pain doesn't seem "deep" enough to be cartlidge problems but who knows? I'm hoping it's only tendon irratation and will pass. I'm planning a super supplement cycle starting in may and don't want to hold back, just want to go HARD CORE. Any ideas? |

Here is my diagnosis:
GO TO A SPECIALIST!!!! You may have done some real damage. Or you may just have over worked or over stressed tendons in your shoulder. But it is better to have the MRI tell you what is up then to have any of us guess. In the mean time. Rest and Ice! |

Good advise P-Funk, my doc is just such a pain in the ass I dred going there and waiting hours in the damn waiting room, then if I need a referal (which I would) it's never ready and have to come back. I just have to deal with the pain in the ass aspect of it though and find out for sure. Plus, I think i'd be a little embarrased if he said "the MRI says there's nothing wrong with you" and then I'd have to wait forever just to hear that from him.

I would try and seek out a sports medecince doctor or some sort of specialist because most doctors don't deal with things like this. There is nothing t be embarrased about the MRI coming back okay. That is something to be happy about.

If you're that unsure go see a doctor that's your best bet. If it is tendon related it can take a long time to go away. As far a causing further damage you & a physician are the only ones that can gauge that.

I'm no expert SJ, so take it for what's its worth, BUT. I had almost this EXACT same injury just a few months ago, just ask Bandaidwoman cuz I PM'ed her about it.
In my case, it took awhile to figure out but it appeared to be caused by doing heavy barbell inclines, probably with too wide of a grip. The pain was mainly at night, and like you said on regular flat bench only the warm up sets bothered me. Here is what I did. ICE, ICE, ICE. Three times a day for 20-30 minutes. Most importantly right after your workout, even if no pain is apparent. Completely drop barbell incline, and do LIGHT DB inclines presses instead, gradually going heavier. For me, once I started doing barbell inclines again (about three-four weeks later), I narrowed up my grip and only went light. Within a couple of weeks I was back up to my normal poundages. |

Everyone here is right. It's real hard diagnosing a problem on line. It sounds like it is either a rotator cuff injury, acromioclavicluar joint injury or bicepital or some form of deltoid tendonitis. In the future, if you don't want to go to your doc for a referral (sounds like your doc isn't into sports medicine...remember, a doc doesn't have to be an orthopod to be good at it) make sure you enroll in a PPO instead of an HMO plan. (ask your human resources) The nice thing is , you can go to any specialist without seeing your primary care doc to get a referral, as long as they are in network. (Most specialists will be anyway, even if they are not in the HMO plan). This will give you alot more freedom. Our employees pay 16 dollars out of their paycheck a month to get it (the $450.00 / month is provided by the employer completely) so for a mere $16.00 a month, these employees get alot more freedom. Ask your employer.
