    optimal workout time

I often see articles/posts about the optimal time for a workout. It seems to range between 30 and 60 minutes; anything over 60 minutes would be 'counter-productive'. I find this surprising because many routines recommend rest periods of to 2-4 minutes depending on the weight lifted. With a trength routine doing 4 exercises of 5 x 5 with a three minute rest between each exercise would need a session of at least an hour. As most of the time in the gym is spent 'resting' I was wondering whether the articles were about actual time spent lifting.

My workout this morning was 4 back exercises, 3 ham exercises, and wrist curls -- it took an hour with the 2 minute rests

    Please enlighten me. thank you

According to most soucres, as short as possible.

Anywhere from 45min to no more than an 1 hour 15 min is generally the rule of thumb.

I've been thinking abou this also, as I have increased my sets from 3 to 4 and 5 per exercise. Wish rests in between. I am doing about 8 to 9 exercises in 1:10.

2 minutes is about as high as you want to go for BB with rest periods unless you are doing legs. 4 minutes and etc = powerlifting.

After 45 minutes or so natural hormone levels start to drop off, in other words the body is tired of you beating up on it and it wants to repair itself.
