I cant lift as much at home as in the gym

At home I have one of those cheap weight sets with the smaller barbell that weighs about 20 pounds. At the gym I can bench 165 but at home I have a hard time doing 130. Is this because the weights are closer together on my bar or am I just wierd lol. THanx

Quality equipment makes the difference. I couldn't bench as much on my home bench, the width of the bench, if it is not fixed to the ground, the thickness of the padding, the bar itself, it all plays a role.

See the second bench article in my sig and they cover equipment. This is yet another reason, why I work out at a gym. I dont want to dump 10 grand on equipment that fits the bill.

It could have something to do with the weights being closer together and the way force/weight is distributed on the bar. You may have the weight of the bar wrong.

I think the main thing is contextual interference. You are taking yourself out of one environment and putting yourself in another. Whether you believe it or not your body responds differnetly to this. This is why at some gyms you feel stonger than at others. One envorinment is more comfortable to your body than the other. Think about a powerlifting meet. Some guys get nervous, chike and miss their lifts with weight that they have done in practice because of the environment (audience, judges, other lifters, etc..). While other lifters may excel and feed of this excitment and push more wieght that they ever have in practice. At the gym you probably get fired up a little more because there are people around and you get excited so your adrenaline goes up and you lift more. While at home there is no one around and the environment is to "casual" for your body to respond accordingly.

i totally see what you guys mean. Before recently I would go to the gym on lift days except whe I worked out my chest because I had a bench at my house. But I never could bench 130 3 xs. And about having a lot of people around me at the gym. Im usually the only in there because I go so early in the monring before school. I was very suprised when I put two 45 on there and was ale to do it easy since I couldnt do it at my home. So I just kept adding more and more weight on there till I reach my max

At the gym, I was a little more self-concious and wound up trying to impress others cause I knew they "could be" watching. Sort of like stage fright together with showing off.

I hope I'm not alone with this. LOL

The quality of the equipment takes part, and the most important factor is that, in the GYM you get motivated more, because the atmosphere makes you feel better, and you just wanna left more..

with that feeling, you WILL lift more!

got my point?!

definatly

feels good when a bunch of srubs are making a big deal of pushing out 70kg, then you come along wack on a couple of extra plates and start pushing out 100kg - well that is similar to what your saying i think

n' they are like... "what???? how he do dat?"

i find being in the gym quite motivating depending on the mood i'm in, if i'm in a hyped up mood that is best coz i just pace around, take deeper breaths and really go at the weights with it all!

but then again i've never worked out properly at home so i can't really compare it, at home i could play my own music so that would definatly help motivate me

peace

dude i have the same problem as you, i usually work out at my house, but but for football the coach wants me with the other players so i have to use the weight room at school. Last year when i did this my max was 15 lbs higher at the school then at my house, and thats too cool to be a mental thing, im actually going in the school weight room today so ill try it again. The bar at my house is a cloer grip then the one at school, maybe that has a difference.
