Train less and intense, rest more and watch yourself grow...

Well another typical leg day for me, just recently switched my approach in training my body. I used to do the Arnold workouts in his book, and as expected from a guy who doesn't have the best genetics, recovery system, and non-roid user I was simply overtraining. I am now utilizing the high intensity training, After two weeks on it I can feel the difference already. I am able to lift more weights, I feel the pump even after I have rested for 3 minutes, I get sore on the folowing days, and I just think I have found the workout for the type of body I have. Guys wish me luck, Those who train heavy 3-4 times a week, eat 6 meals a day, sleeps for a solid 10-12 hours, and just simply loves the lifestyle... DITTO!!!
(you think i got my eyes closed but i've been lookin' at you the whole f#@$in' time...)
once upon a time i could control myself
once upon a time i could lose myself
once upon a time i could love myself
once upon a time i could love you

Well I guess this thread is supposed be about either people who love to train the high volume way/ people that train a body part 2-3 times a week or people who train 2-3 days a week, a body part per week, and do things a little bit intense....

I agree... intensity is the way to go!

As to volume, I think its a tool to be used now and then, but not done all the time. I'd say its a good way to shock your muscles.

I am an advocate of high volume. I believe that it promotes vascularity, and I also get a much better workout on it.

I thought better vascularity was primarily a result of a decreased body fat percentage?

Right now, I am on a different training program. Its TP-PT so it varys from week to week. But when I was doing 1 part a day 1 time a week, I was at around 30+

It is. But ever since I started to do higher volume, I notice a large increase in my vascularity. Shoulders, traps, arms. I have yet to drop below 10% bf too.

i've been doing that routine, where you use heavy weight and only do like 4-6 reps, and yeah i'm growing slightly but i'm sure if i was working legs too then i would be growing way more. i dont work out my legs at all, in fear of losing my speed/quickness. my friend did heavy squating in the offseason and when he went back to football, he was slow as could be. and i play soccer so my speed is even more important.

I have a feeling that is related to the additional blood volume you may have gained by doing a full body workout. It is more cardio-intensive than one part per week style, and cardio can increase your blood volume. Increased muscle mass also may be a reason. However, my theories are just as good as yours, so perhaps there is something to what you're saying. I've just never heard of that making a difference.

True. But I havent done cardio for a year atleast, and I have never done a full body workout. Well, this is the first time that comes close(tp-pt).

During my time "off" my last "supplement run" if you will I really noticed my recouperation dropped off dramatically. I never felt it to that extent before but when training hard I really had to lower the sets by a large margin, at one point I was doing 18 sets for back and then later I was cutting almost everything in half.

For deadlifts I do one heavy set and NO MORE, and I'm still feeling it later through the week.

Kid I dont know how old you are but I assume your much younger then I. This was the kinda thinking back in the 60's concerning weights and fooball,"tho it was starting to change". For many years there was tremendous parrallel misinformation about squats. I'd say your friends loss of speed came from some other thing he wont admit to. There is no lift more critical to developing a football player then the squat. In my opinion its the most important sports lift by far. And thats any sport where explosive speed is required. When I was coaching kids I simply wouldnt have anyone on my offensive line that wasnt developing their squat.

Safely yes, slowly yes, consistantly yes. But for a football player the squat is an awsome developmental weapon. I love it so much I still do squats, even after 7 back operations and 4 knee operations, includeing a reconstruction. I suggest you reconsider your stance on doing squats for soccer.

I get pumped up just thinking about squats.............take care.....................Rich

i build my speed by coupling squats with wind sprints and stretching. one day i'll do squats (lightweight, not heavy, vein-splitting squatting) the next i'll do a series of sprints and quickness work. stretching helps so much, i got much faster over the course of last spring/summer and alot of it was from increased flexibility.

anyway i dont really try to build too much mass in my legs, but just increase my quickness.
