    The pituitary gland releases growth hormone. Since GH is associated with repair, I would say that everything does but if you are talking a larger degree it would be the larger bodypart/compound movement which would be squats and deads I'd say.

    GH is released at night near bedtime, its not an instantaneous thing.

    I dont know, but I would think its triggered before that. That was one possible issue with keeping pilots awake with the new drugs we have that turn off the sleep mechanism.

    No, it's more of a relaxation response, the more relaxed you are (the deeper your sleep) the more HGH your body will release. (Assuming you've done the necessary muscular work to trigger that release.) This is one of the arguments for working out at night, right before going to bed. You stress your muscles, eat a high protein meal, then sleep and bathe your muscles in HGH.

    ok i guess i worded it wrong. sorry. what i meant was, they say that training the bigger lifts like squats releases more growth hormone. so do all lifts help release more growth hormone?

    Well 0-dub, as they stated... GH is released in a repair phase of your body. So basically most damage that you do to your tissue fibers would probably result in additional GH release of some kind. Theres probably some kind of cap on it too though

    Regardless, I think that the bigger movements help you release more GH because they stress you more (cause more damage). The single movements (biceps, triceps, delts, etc) do less because they tax your system less.

    I wonder if the GH release corresponds to taxation on the nervours system or to actualy damage caused.

    Although I don't know if growth hormone release varies depending on muscle damage or central nervous strain, I have read that large compound exercises invoke more of a hormonal response in the form of testosterone (Which must be why I'm so damned horny at the end of leg and back workouts). Squats are supposed to be the king of testosterone, which also aids in strength and mass gains. I would assume that growth hormonal response is similar, but assumption is quite often wrong.

    Testosterone levels are higher in the morning, excersize does not stimulate testosterone levels to my knowlege.

    Hrm, this information must have come from some BS article then. I read it in some article that was saying you should do squats before you workout your arms so that your testosterone levels are higher and your arms will benefit as such. There's too much misinformation out there. I'll have to research the subject more.

    I found this:

    Exercise stimulates the pituitary gland to produce regulatory gonadotrophins to stimulate the testes to produce testosterone.

    Total Testosterone: There was an increase in total testosterone after exercise, particularly after resistance exercise. There was a significant session by time interaction due to the pronounced decline in total testosterone during recovery from resistance exercise. Area under the curve results indicated that the SED subjects had significantly greater total testosterone concentrations compared to END or RES subjects.

    END = Endurance
    SED = Sedentary
    RES = Resistance

    Only resistance training that is high in intensity, utilizing 8-10 repetitions, heavy resistance and a maximum of one minute rest between sets will maximize serum testosterone and growth hormone levels, thus allowing for successful recovery, adaptation, and muscular growth.

    It appears that it has some affect, at least in terms of basal testosterone levels...

    Hormones are secreted during and after resistance training. Muscle remodeling takes place due to these hormonal secretions, and our aim is for these hormonal changes to be of the anabolic variety.

    I keep finding stuff that supports what I said...

    I have heard and read that as well. However for the trained athelete there has to be a ceiling as to how much over baseline exercise will increase test production.

    True, but if there is a difference then there is a difference. Every little increase in anabolic hormones is worth something.

    Interesting, however, is it constant through the day? I seriously doubt they were monitoring blood 24 hours a day and testosterone only normally spikes once in the AM it is not at a constant level.

    So perhaps excersize only promotes premature, "right now" release, but not higher levels. I'd have to read a whole study to even take a guess at how in depth they really studied this, I'll check the links tomorow if I can.

    I've seen a training setup where you do a set of squats every day before the rest of your workout. I dont remember who wrote it.

    It depends on which study you look at. One of them did say they did the test at some certain time of day when testosterone levels are supposed to be pretty stable.

    That is something I never thought about when getting a blood test, I wonder how results could be affected from AM to PM. I would say test is probably fairly stable for 12 hours or so, as a guess based on suspension.
