Only using 50 lbs as a warmup?? Man, I got some work to do![]()
I just started using dumbells for doing my bench press so that I don't have to worry so much about not always having a spotter.
The problem is that I think my hands are just weak. I was only using a pair of 50 pound dumbells(as a warmup) when my hands starting hurt like crazy. That fleshy part between the thumb and my fingers was hurting so much that I had to stop and I couldn't continue.
My hands don't hurt when I do flys. I get up to 50 pounds. I realize that the stress points on the hand for flys and press are different though.
So I guess that I need to strenghten my hands somehow. How?
Also, can I wear gloves for now so that I can actually put a little strain on my chest?
Thanks.

I will get sore in the fleshy part of my hands on occassion when doing bench press or Mil press. Usually when I am pushing for reps. I use a pair of Harbinger (sp) gloves that have thick pads on the palm area to help spread the point loading. I do not use them as much as I used to. I am doing more in the 4-8 rep range now instead of 8-12. Even though I am using heavier weight, the lower reps have helped me. And the gloves helped as well for pushing exercises.

There is no facial expression for a shrug. Too bad.
I haven't lifted for over ten years and I am just getting back into it. We all have to start somewhere.
BTW, I do know you are teasing.
Thanks Phred, I will look into them.
I know that part of it is just getting used to it. When I first starting squating, I had to stop because it hurt my shoulders. What a pu**y, eh? That's what my friend told me. Eh... With a little bit of added muscle and being used to it - crawling under that bar is like coming home now.
Hopefully the gloves will help me get over the hump of getting used to the pressure.

I occasionaly have hand pain. Its the bad kind thats probably arthritus I just try and work thru it. Im in so much pain all the time anyway it really doesnt matter. The only thing that relieves it is throwing myself at the iron. By all means wear gloves, Ive always worn gloves. I think this pain will pass.
And congrats on the 50lbs'r's and the attitude to "keep truckin". After my surgeries I started off with 25lb flys, now Im up to much higher weight. Thats the great thing about the iron, your only competing against yourself..........take care...........Rich
Teasing myself...There is no facial expression for a shrug. Too bad.

lol....I may have jumped too high also for the dumbell warmup. I warmup with 135lb on the bar for bench press, so I figured the warming up with 50lb dumbells would be ok.......
Although I haven't really lifted seriously before(about 5 months into lifting), I am blessed with good genes.
It true though, it doesn't matter how much you lift because you are lifting against one person only - yourself.
