adaptation ~ routine switch??

okay i've heard ppl on this board talk about switching up your routine once in awhile because sooner or later your muscles will adapt to the movement or whatever! well, why not just up the weight on the exercises instead? i did that friday for my legs, and now they are hella sore! n hadn't been sore the last couple weeks that i've worked my legs

HST training uses a principle similar to this called progressive resistance. I don't know the full details, but you start out by not going anywhere near failure. You decrease your distance to failure progessively for several weeks until you reach that point. Eventually you start out a little higher and end up a little higher. Any HST veterans please come and correct me if I butchered this concept, but I believe I got the general idea down.

Anyway, why would you want to keep your exercises the same? I only change mine every 3 months, but I find that is enough that I still make gains and prevent boredom with my previous exercises.

Furthermore, I have read that you need to stimulate the muscle fibers throughout the muscle for optimal muscle growth. For example, incline press will stimulate more clavicular chest fibers. Now, don't start flaming me; I'm not saying whether or not you can make certain portions of the muscle grow, but the entire muscle will benefit in terms of growth if you stimulate different fibers throughout the musclulature.
