Building neck without neck ext./flex machine

I loved the neck machine at school...in fact, it almost seems as if I'm the only one who uses it once a week.

Anyway, I'm home for the summer now and have only been doing static isometric neck excercises for the back and front (where I let the neck hold my body weight with my head planted on the ground).

The problem with these static excercises is that it's unsafe (and I'm sure detrimental) and uncomfortable for doing it to the side neck muscles...the delts are in the way.

Does anyone own one of those neck developer things where it goes over your head like a crown? Does that work well and does it work all four sides of neck? Are they expensive?

Even better, doesn't anyone have neck excercises (full rotation excercises) that doesn't involve throwing down money for some equipment? I know I can just lay on a ledge and flex and extend over the edge, but the average human head does not have enough weight to force 8-10 reps max per set.

I used to have a lether strap type thing that you put on your head like a hat, it has a chain you can hang a plate from. I did it for a while, then stopped. It seemed like it was putting too much stress on my upper rear-neck area... But, i know it's cheap...I think i paid 20 or 30 bucks at Sportmart....

Hold a dumbell on your head/forehead and do that. Rap it in a towel and hold it in place with your hands. Wrestlers swear by neck bridges and have huge fuckin necks. Build your traps up and you're neck will be bigger.

All you need is a flat bench, a towel and a few plates.

Any flat surface that your head can fully extend off of the edge would work. Pick up a few items around the house......put them on a weight scale and find something that weighs around the weight you want and looks like it could be not uncomfortable on your forehead (with a towel between). It won't be as good as the machine back at school, but some resistance is better than not doing it, right?

Here is a website (with small running video and instructions on form):
