I'm weird in that I can't stand working out in a gym. I have to work out at home. The gyms in my area kind of suck and their hours conflict with my schedule too much. Plus, they are kind of expensive. I figure with the money I spend every year on a gym membership, I can just buy my own equipment and get a great workout in. I turned my living room into my mini-gym and can always get awesome workouts in via my squat rack, bench, and free weights.
Gym's piss me off. They force you to work out with people you don't like, with hours you don't like, while you listen to music you don't like. Working out from home you can listen to whatever the hell you want and you can also work out with your shirt off, which is a must for me. I can't stand working out with a shirt on.
I'm also pretty anti-social. I've never been a people person. Hence, I get more in my "zone" when I work out by myself. Sucks I usually never have a spotter, though.

Home-does take some money to set up, but not as much as you'd think if you take a little time to research the increasingly effective and relatively small-in-size options now available for home use. Consider the optimal combination of multiple-purpose equipment that have relatively small footprints, and you can equal the gym experience. An example would be the various home multiple station leverage gyms - IMO leverage is better than free weights, and doesn't require a spotter. I'm sore in all the right places with what's been chosen.
The motivational part's something some can achieve at home, some can't; with some thought this can be developed and maintained at a gym level.

Actually, you can get a pretty nice set of weights for pretty cheap:

Okay, now here's something someone might actually buy: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...entPage=family
Plus we all know how effective free weights are, and these certainly wouldn't take up much room.
i bought a 160lb barbell and dumbell set, and i found one of those benches with an adjustable incline and leg curl and leg extension on clearence for $35.i also got a weider machine for cable stuff and a cheap leg press. all i really need is a squat rack.
Each person's different, have to try both for a while and see. Some just can't get motivated at home; I can, and admit that just getting to the gym helps get the blood pumping, but that can be achieved at home.
Ive posted it before but here it is again,
There is literaly nothing that I cant do at a "real" gym that I cant do here. Just takes creativety.

Someday....I will be like you....
I like working out at home because I worry more about form than impressing stupid asses who think the bench press and the e-z bar curl are the only lifts that matter
"in the howling bleeding nights, the dogs plunge into the Volga and swim desperately to gain the other bank. The nights of Stalingrad are a terror for them. Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; only men endure."
Another one that works out at home...
Used to belong to an all woman's gym and then joined a 'fancy' gym in an upscale area...the guys couldn't seem to get used to a woman in the free weights section and the trainers kept asking me if I really wanted to use the free weights verses the machines...drove me nuts!
I'll stick to my home and equipment. The settings are always were I left them, I never have to wait for equipment, everything is right where I left it, I can dress (or not) according to how I feel for the day and I can have music or not of my choice!

I work out at the gym.. I would never get it done if I was to do it at home.. Emma is always very clingy.. (my daughter).

I think you can do most everything with a simple pair of DBs and enough weight. That's all I use for my workout (except I use a curl bar to do deadlifts, and I do realize the importance of that lift, especially since I love it oh, so much). I just hate machines so much. After finding out how much easier they were than free weights (I could do 190 on the 'bench' part of our machine when I was about 12 or 13, and now, at 15, I can only do a real bench of 180), I never had the desire to use them again. Besides, why would you want to rely on a bunch of huge machines rather than compact little DBs that allow you to get a much better workout with less weight (and they still don't require a spotter)? Plus the facts mentioned above that you listen to your music, and sit in your own sweat, and do it whenever, however, and for however long you want, and I don't really see what could be better.
Prefer the gym but home workouts can be time savers when needed.

i lov emy home gym. Yes i have about 5000 dollars spent on it and when i graduate college and get my own house i vow to build the most bad ass gym ever hahahah but it saves me time then going to the gym and waiting for machines and trying to find a workout buddy that wants to pay the cost for a membership. so i bought all my own equipment and now i have friends over all the time working out with me which is a big help cuz we can push eachother so im a believer in the home gym
and thats my 2 cents
Home works well if you're able to motivate yourself, only some can. As far as cost and space, with the new options out now if you look around you can find equipment equal to that at gyms at low used and new prices that cover virtually all the bases as in a gym, taking little space.
There is an advantage with the gym energy, but some can get the same intensity at home, save time and have more convenience. Works for me; i'll probably never go back to training in a gym other than once in a while just for a change of pace.
I'd rather just workout at home, if I could afford weights.
I seem to get in the way of the bigger guys quite frequently at the gym.

Home was good when I 1st started but to do more leg work & go heavier in general became difficult. Plus just for the sake of "having fun" I like all the options @ the gym. Although it was fun just lifitng in my boxer briefs @ home on hot days.
Home. I have my basement packed with equipment. It's convienient, no waiting, and I can spit on the floor if I want to. Watch the newspapers and the secondhand shops. You can get great equipment for cheap.
I enjoy the gym now that I have joined one, but no dress code is certainly one of the perks of home workouts. Shirtless and barefoot was how I used to do it.Originally Posted by da jock
I find the gym is worth it because it allows me to follow a powerlifting routine with a greater level of safety. I can now use squats racks. The greater selection of exercises is nice too, but I still use very few machines. Free weights still comprise the bulk of my lifts.

I worked out at home for about 9 months, but then joined my buddies gym just a few miles down the road. I like the atmosphere there.
