Bench press is definitely the staple of my chest workout. However, I'm sure it's quite possible to build a nice chest without doing the bench press. Try dips, cable crossovers, and variations of flys.

In my earlier lifting days flat bench was the exercise that gave me the best results in shaping my chest. Now I use other moves cables, decline, incline to supplement my chest workout. If I work my chest without flat my soreness last for about 2 days. With flat bench my chest is sore for 3-4 days so I know my chest is getting a beating!

everybody is right
It really depends on your body, what feels like it's most effective To You.
I hardly ever use flat bench. I use dumbells almost exclusively, because I feel i get the best range of motion, & most control from them. I do dumbell presses, dumbell flyes, inclines, declines. Use the pec dec, etc. The flat bench has it's place, no doubt about it. use what works best for ya, & good luck. -P |

try using dumbell presses instead of the barbell. it might relieve the pain in your shoulders.
