    Question How does weight training effect your heart?

    Hi everyone

    I'm new to the boards here, and wondered if someone could offer some advice.

    I have always been quite fit, and have incorporated weight training into my regime for about 8-9 months now. But for the last 4 months, I have noticed that my heart races (you can feel it pounding) all the time (at rest and when training). I lowered the volume a lot, but it still happens, and it is a bit disconcerting! I'm on a three day split (have tried 4 and 2), and my weight sessions last for about an hour. I also incorporate quite a bit of running and general cardio work (I've always done this). I notice that if I stop lifting it takes about 2 weeks for my heart to go back to normal. I have tried high reps and low reps...I have an office job so I don't think it can be general overtraining.

    I'd hate to have to stop lifting! Anyone experienced anything similar? I don't feel ill or anything although when it gets bad I do get a tired - my body is obviously trying to tell me something! I will visit my doctor but sometimes doctors aren't that helpful.

    Some quick stats: Age 27, weight 117lbs, height 5ft 4
    Eat approx 1600 calories a day - clean

    Any thoughts?

    Your heart is racing because you are working your ass off. I reach over 100 BPM but I'm not sure how high it gets because I dont carry a heart monitor with me. Leg day is the one that really gets it moving the most, I'd guess I reach 120-130 on leg day, dunno though.

    If you can make your way over to a cardio bike quickly you can test your heart rate there and it should be relatively close.

    When you say at rest if you mean outside of the gym during normal every day life, unless you have gained a lot of weight or your blood pressure has fluctuated it has nothing to do with lifting weights. My resting heart rate is in the 50s and I'm in the high 260 pound area.

    As far as I know, weightlifting is actually a decent anaerobic workout for the heart. It should be good for your heart if anything. I wouldn't worry about it unless your heart rate starts nearing dangerous levels.
    The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

    Well, a high resting heart rate is a sign of ill health so if its over 60 I would get it looked at if you have insurance. In a generic sense, the lower the heart rate the longer you will live, because oxygen not only feeds the brain but it slowly kills it.

    That is of course if something else doesn't kill you first.

    Many marathoners have a 45ish resting heart rate.

    Thanks for the advice guys

    Yes it is "pounding" all the time, not just while I am lifting. I might wake up at night and it is going on then.. or first thing in the morning. Oh for sure it jumps out my chest when I'm training lol! I do train intensely.

    I thought it was worth asking in this forum because it has only started really since I went heavy (4-6 reps) although I agree lifing is meant to be good for your heart! Although I'm also aware that the stress of lifting might also be effecting it but I'm pretty fit generally so hopefully it's the latter.

    I've made an appointment to see my doctor so maybe they will be able to help :-)
