    Weight For Dumbbells Vs Barbell

I started lifting a few months ago, and I'm just curious how much weight people use for dumbbells as compared to a regular barbell when doing bench presses? I seem to be doing a lot less weight with dumbbells compared to the barbell. Is this normal?

    Same thing happens to me...

I think it has something to do with less balance and motion, when you have a barbell its easy to balance between your two hands and the motion is pretty synchronized since both of your hands have to pretty well press upwards parallel to each other, opposed to dumbell presses where each of your hands have to individually struggle to maintain the smooth motion.

Yes, I think it's pretty normal/typical to use less weight on dumbbell movements.

I use up to 280lbs on barbell bench press for up to 6 reps. I use up to 120lb dumbells for around 6 reps. That should give you an idea just how much harder it is.

Incline bench, up to 235lbs for 6 reps, 105lb dumbells for 6 reps with dumbells.
