HIIT vs. Longer Intervals

First..I did read all the HIIT posts I could find here. My question is "Why 1 minute intervals?" Why not 2 minute or 3 minute? Is the one minute simply the time that most can sprint for? I understand the idea of intervals vs. 65% Max HR stuff but not why the intervals are only one minute. It seems that the shorter rest barely allows for a decrease in heart rate. I found one previous post that advocated the longer intervals. I also found some that advocated 20-30 second intervals. Is the interval the important part or the length of it. Any thoughts?

If you can sprint 100% for longer than 1 minute than more power to you and go for 2 or 3 minutes. However, the benefits are happening when your heart is adjusting back to a lower intensity. So if I was you and I could sprint for 2-3 minutes at 100%, I would do 2-3 minutes at 100% then 1 minute at 70%-80% and alternate that sequence for 20 minutes.

Maybe there is an optimal way of doing it, but I don't even time it. I just go by feel. I jog for a bit, then sprint until I am barely going above a jogging pace, repeat.

Hell, I have trouble doing a full out sprint for longer than 30sec!

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...

I am not saying that I can sprint for that long. Intervals dont necessarily have to be done at 100%. They can be done at 90% which gives a longer time that you can go. One minute seems like a short interval. When I used to race bikes in college we would do longer intervals and longer rest periods. Although the puposr of the training was obviously different.

Definately a track! I used to do it on treadmills but I don't think that's to good.
