Where you all workout at, are there any big Asian guys?
I'm just curious, that's all. It just seems that sports like football and wrestling, where mass does not hinder you, like weight division-less sports (soccer, vball), are not really played by Asians. So do you see that many big Asians where you work out or live? Even where I live (Twin Cities, MN) eventhough there are alot of Asians, there are hardly any big guys. And when I mean big, I'm just talking about Rey Mysterio big, not necessarily Chris Benoit or Triple H big. Dat Nguyen (Dallas Cowboys) is actually one of my motivations because I'm sure he ain't the first Asian to play NFL, but at 220+lbs, he sure is the first big-ass Asian player! By the way, I'm not that big either. I try my best, and 170lbs is where I'm at after my 6 months mass gain stage. I would get killed playing in Dat Nguyen's position but among my friends, I actually have one of the highest strength to weight/mass ratio and not only that, I'm one of the heavier guys...just to give you an idea of how small a group of Asian is
Comments? Discussion? Any fellow sociologists/anthro in here by any chance ? |

Tim's Total Fitness: Byron, GA. I haven't seen any huge asians in the gym lately.
Perhaps it's genetics or diet, predisposition. I saw an asian guy that was pretty damn big on DF.com. |

I have seen some over the years. I think it just seems like there are not that many because statistically the asian population is small in the US. I know that in 1999 only 4% of the US population was asian. but those numbers have definetly increased as asians and hispanics are the two fastest growing populations in the US right now...

Diet does play a role, but I think genetics only play a minor role. Hell, my cousin is lightning fast, he plays soccer. He doesn't eat more than 1500 calories a day, even when he's training. And he doesn't like to weight train. So really, for him it's more of the idea that he's afraid mass will slow him down. But I think he would be more of a killer if he had 10 or 15 more lbs on him. It's really more of the belief that having alot of muscle will slow you down. I intend to change that belief next spring when my upcoming fall cut phase is done in winter hehe. It'll be strange being 170lbs on the soccer field though...soccer players aren't normally that big. All is well though, because my quads are the biggest and easiest to build part of my body.

A good friend of my I played football with from South Korea weights 230lbs and I tell you he can hit, crazy mother f*cker. You could hear when he hit somebody wherever you were standing on the field. If there is one person I hated to tackle heads up during scrimmage it was him, he knocked my ass back a few times. But once I have a grip on you, you’re not going anywhere so he never went far.
![]() I seriously though he was going to play college, he certainly could. But during his senior year looks like he put girls as his priority and kind of lost that hunger I always saw him play with. Shame ![]() |

There's one guy at my gym in NYC who is big, probably not over 200lbs., but working on it.
However, Kris Dim certainly bucks the trend (and he's short). And I think Stan McCray is part Asian, too. So there's two pros doing their thing. |

Because I'm not on an Atkins Diet nor would I ever do one. I'm a BB not a dieter!

Asian is just such a general term. Compare the genetics of a Korean with that of a Vietnamese, and that of a Japaneses Sumo.
I think Asians in general ,in the United States, are smaller then Europeans and Africans in the United States, but Asians represent such a small % of the population. Considering cultural and dietary differences its not surprising that there are few really big Asians. But look outside the US and you will find Asians make up a solid half of the worlds' total population. A snap shot of Asians based on US population could not possibly be more skewed. |

There's a couple asians at my gym. One of them works there as a trainer. The trainer is maybe 5'8", 200lbs. The other guy is at least 6ft, and he's friggin beefy. He always wears a sweatshirt and sweatpants, but he's pretty damn strong. He has a powerlifter build.

I am confused. As for "Asians," that I "see" working out it depends on which city and what country. Some cities and certain countries have a higher percentage of Asians than others. Quote:

I live in Asia ( Malaysia) and I don't know any!! LOL
I think you'd probably find more big Asian guys in the US than in Asia, as the majority of people here are not into BB, fitness ends with running.. so I think the mentality matters as much as genetics... and when I say Asian guys I mean as in asian race ( biological denominator) not geographical attribute... |

Mostly a lot of asians that came here came for the schools and the endless possibilities. The ability to rise up from no where and make something out of oneself. Instead of being told by the government that you will spend the rest of your life breaking rocks at some mine for the good of the people (communists) this example taken from the CEO of WebEx who spent 7 years working as a miner because the Communist Gov. told him that was his job for the rest of his life. That is the main drive in the asian american family culture - go to a top notch school. Hmm tho most vietnamese americans were pulled out with the fall of Saigon and us pulling out trying to save as many as we could before the North swept in and crushed any and all opponents, and their families. Culturally scholars and wisemen are also considered heroes in asian history. Easily comparable to the level of war heroes and famous martial artists and warleaders. It helps that some of the best and brightest minds were also some of the best tacticians and generals of their day.
Thankfully when it comes to nutrition with access to things like MILK and not soymilk and other things like lots of BEEF, Chicken, Pork etc. have brought about a return to bigger and taller asians. In South Korea their media have begun reporting on how their young teenagers all seem to be growing "so" much taller and their frames/body structures are wider. The issue with a lot of asians has been for hundreds of years nutrition. Now with access to the world foodmarket and being able to purchase foods at a much more affordable price. City folk can really feed their bodies. Tho I wouldn't say that for a bulk of the chinese in the Mainland or the vast majority of asians that are countryfolk from South Korea to China. It's about being able to afford more then a small bowl of rice and some boiled cabbage. ![]() |

There's only believe it or not 2 Asian guys that have some good size, shape & power where I am.
One guy is about 5ft9 or so I'm just guessing & weighs at least 190lbs with very good condition & some descent power. The other guy I'm guessing is around 6ft tall & probably weighs at least 195lbs but probably more with pretty descent condition & some good power. I have a 30yr old Chinese buddy who's been training naturally on & off the last 12yrs who is about 5ft9 & weighs 190lbs but ripped (before ever training he was only 145lbs). With greatly shaped legs with size & a good solid upper body. But for someone who has taken juice before he should have more power I think personally. But he still holds great condition for a 190lb bodyweight. |
