Well, metabolism can be broken down into two categories.

1. Basal Metabolism
2. Voluntary Metabolism

Basal metabolism is responsible for 70% of the calories you burn, roughly speaking. This is your body functioning. Your heart beat, feeding your muscles and organs, brain, etc.

Voluntary metabolism is the remaining 30% and is our exercise, etc.

So when someone wants to lose fat I tell them to gain muscle. Yes, the scale says you're heavier, but you will LOOK better and feel better, and now that you've got all the extra muscle speeding up your basal metabolism, it makes it harder for you to regain the fat you lost.

Hope that makes sense.

yay.

So did I. So it never ceases to amaze me when people go on "diets." It may be common knowledge that what they're eating is only going to hold sway over 3/10th of their metabolism, but they ignore it. And they get nowhere.

It should be common knowledge. But when I see people weighting themselves in the fitness center locker room on the scale they sometimes say, "I gained 2 pounds," or "I lost 3 pounds." Probably lost water weight and some muscle. They don't eat post workout meals, and definately don't eat frequent small meals. I never say a word to them.

the way you train has little bearing, 10 reps, 20 reps, whatever, your diet is the key.

That’s exactly what I do; I have never gone on a diet to lose weight. My thought is keep getting bigger and as the muscles grow even more the better I will look and the more calories I’ll be able to burn in the long run.
