I hope I'm able to keep lifting well into my 50's.
When those of you who are at your physical peak decide to decrease the amount of time you spend in the gym, and start going back to a more "normal" diet? How long can it take to lose what you've gained.
It's something that I've wondered about lately. A lot of you put some serious time and sacrifice into working out well beyond the average level. Is it something you will try and continue doing well into your 70s? or will you at some point tame your workouts down to a limited form of maintenance? I see some of you and marvel at your physical stature, but wonder if I would have the ability to keep it at that constant level.
Party on.

There is a man at my gym, who is 55+ that still benches well in the 200's
I will continue till I die, or just physically can't do it anymore. Which ever comes first...![]()
I read in one of the more reputable bb magazines (sorry can't remember which one) that in as little as 12 weeks of stopping training you would lose all muscle gained through lifting regardless of how long you'd been lifting... not sure I completely believe it and if it's true it's a scary thought!Originally Posted by Honic

I have recently been out 13 weeks.(illness and injury) I have lost a total of 20Lbs.

I stopped weight training nearly completely when I went through the Police Academy for 6 and a half months, which was a total of 23 weeks. (This is course didnt include pushups, situps, running and so forth as weight trianing).
I dropped from around 19 percent bodyfat to 12 percent bodyfat in this time, and when I returned to the gym, I was WEAK.
However, it only took me about 8 weeks to get back to the strength I was before, and maybe 10 weeks to blow my old records to hell! So muscle memory is definitely something that exists in some manner.

I depends of what you call a "normal" lifestyle or a diet.
PreMier, what do you mean with 13 weeks?
Thank God Dave.. you just saved my day![]()

Yeah, I need to start reading those journal again.
Were you in TP program?
yea but prem, you gotta remember that being ill will make you lose weight
so if you had just stopped healthily, as in not being sick and just say you took off 13 weeks, then you woulda only lost about 10 lbs at most prolly...
Dave, I dislocated my shoulder. It is feeling better, but this last Saturday I separated my "other" shoulder. Slight tear in ligaments, its a 1.5 on a 3point scale. Just saw the orthopedist today. Is that what you were wondering?
Yea V, I was. I didnt finish due to illness.
MCP- I have been eating like total shit too.. I cant justify spending 120$+ a week on food when I am not working out![]()

I think I can now. I am still on a steroid inhaler for inflamed bronchial tubes. Its just that any physical activity has made me cough...

All I know is that I have been lifting weights since I was 15 years old and I have never stopped, and at this point in my life feel that I ever will. I will train with weights until the day I die, in fact I hope that I die in the gym.Originally Posted by Honic
As far as the diet, another thing I often think about, it does get tiresome always eating healthy and eating 5-6 meals per day, protein shakes, etc. I cannot predict how long I will follow such a strict diet. I will always remain healthy and eat healthy, but not sure if I will always be eating 5-6 times per day and drinking shakes and stuff like that.

For incline, try dumbells. My shoulders are bad, and I cant do barbell incline, but dumb inc works fine. Worth tryin.Originally Posted by myCATpowerlifts
