    Grip problem

Back when I was younger I played Fullback in football and fullback/backup goalie in soccer. How is that relevant? I have successfuly jammed every finger in both hands at least 3 times each. I am a case of arthritis waiting to happen.
Now for my question. Is there anything I can do to help me grip better? For example, when I am doing deadlifts my hands cause me to lift less weight than I know I can. My grip gives out and I end up not working out how I should.
Any ideas ya'll can give me?

    Thanks...

Pump, my man, it may be very obvious to you, but I had not lifted in at least a decade and was looking to see what the best way to go was. See, back then, I didn't have a grip problem, so I didn't bother looking for ways to help my grip.
    I'll look into lifting straps.

Grip exercises is what Iwould recommend. Plate pinches, forearm work, towell hangs, etc.

No not the wrist wraps or supports, I mean (as pump said) 'lifting straps', they wrap around your wrist and then around the db/bb etc.
I have pathetic little 6" wrists and when I am doing certain exercises, such as single arm rows with a 55lb db I HAVE to use lifting straps or I would end up dropping the weights well before my back is exhausted. I use them a lot!

I do use lifting straps for dead lifts. I am getting closer to being able hold the bar the whole time for my set of 4-6, but just like any other muscle forearms need work to build the grip. Towel hangs are nice, there was someone else on the board here who suggested just picking some weights off the floor 4-6"'s and holding it for as long as you could, or a count of ten. I do them both. I also do farmers walks 2 x's a week, these help the grip tremendously.

I know the thread is old, but I have the exact same dilemma. Even with straps, I can't finish my sets of deadlifts because of my grip. I am not familiar with farmers walk, and I suppose towel hang is just what it sounds like. Please enlighten me on these.

That's a poor philosophy in my opinion.

Anyone with grip issues and who haven't tried a mixed-grip approach should try it.

And towell, you throw two towells over a bar, then you grab them(one in each hand) and hang from them.

Thanks. I don't think they have the Farmer's Walk Handles at my gym, but I could use dumbells (and try not smash my legs). The towel hang sounds like a great idea.

Try loading up a BB and then doing static holds, just hold it as long as you can. Thats a good one too.

I'll try that, too. I guess I will do these at the end of my back routine (after deadlifts).

I'm down with static holds. However, for some reason, direct forearm work never did nearly as much as Westside has done for me. I was having serious trouble with far less weight. Now, my grip strength is blowing past the necessary level. I hope it remains that way. I refuse to use straps.

Buy yourself a heavy duty hand gripper use it 3-4 times a week. Do 3-4 sets for 8-12 reps each set each time you do it.

Plus do a few various forearm exercises.

Such as the palms facing upward wrist squeeze & the palms facing downward wrist squeeze with the bar.

For palms facing upwards it's better to take a weighted bar place your forearms at the end of the bench with bar in hands, then let the bar roll down to your finger tips & squeeze the weight back up so you feel your forearms.

For the palms facing down exercise it's the same procedure, except your palms are facing downwards at the end of the bench with the bar in hand.

These 3 exercises done a few times a week are sure to improve your grip.

But don't use straps either. I don't really believe in them as you're cheating yourself with straps.

I don't like hand grippers. They never offer enough resistance to do much. It's worth a try though; that is just my personal opinion.

i do french curls for forearms, and hang from a pullup bar for as long as i can.... i guess thats kinda like towel hangs. works for me.

to me wrist straps seem like they would make the problem worse... kinda like using a weight belt if you have a weak core. strengthen the muscles, don't use lifting devices to make yourself seem stronger.

Like I said if you're using a heavy duty gripper, there are models with attached weights to them but they're more expensive

I don't get the logic behind "wrist straps are bad". You wouldn't be able to lift nearly as much weight without a barbell, either. Should we do away with barbells and just lift plates? Wrist straps don't keep you from gaining stength in your grip. You don't let the bar just hand from them. You still grip the bar.

Nice. I'm used to those flimsy turds I have to squeeze 400 times before I reach failure.
