Am i to young to be training?

Im 14 years old but im pretty mature for my age, alot of people say i look about 16 or 15 but ive heard places that training/doing weights when your young isnt good for you? Am i at a ok age to be doing weights etc?

Im not doing anything extreme, just trying to get hardrr/fletter abbs and lifting arm weights. I do about three set's of 50 crunches and 100 arm weights (not shure what its really ment to be called) a day. The arm weights are 6.5kg each.

Is it ok that im doing weights etc?

14 is definetly ok to start lifting weights. a lot of use here started at 13. concentrate on learning proper form and especially how to train the legs properly.

    good luck !
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

I asked the same question when I first started training for football when I was 14yrs old.

They said it's best to learn proper form, & slowly & patiently work your way up into the heavy weight.

They also told me not to do squats b/c it could stunt my growth.

They said it's better just to do some leg press & hamstrings.

But training at 14yrs old is okay, I see 12yr olds training at my gym.

Squats will not stunt your growth ... ask your doc about it then post the answer for us. Inquiring minds need to know.

The 'too young' myth might have stemmed from the use of
    steroids.
    If not actually, then potentially.

infact don't ask your Doc, most don't know the first thing about weight training. start slow, learn the big lifts i.e. squat, deadlift, and bench. stay away from failure, and have someone who knows what they are doing take you under their wing. good luck man

I was told by a sports medicine physician that squats will stunt your growth when you're younger.

& man this sports medicine physician was huge, probably on some serious stuff.

But he sure knew his stuff as he was training for almost 20yrs & had his degree in sports medicine & had a private physio therapy clinic that he ran.

    At 11?

That's pretty young if I do say so myself.

You never had a problem with height? How tall are you now?

    Maybe I could've started younger then to & I would've been bigger.

    Oh well.

What a shock, Johnny knows yet another "expert" on something.

Show me anyone whose growth has been hindered by lifting weights. In fact, explain HOW lifting weights would stunt growth.

NOTE: I hate the word stunt. Every time I type it I think of the Icy Hot Stuntaz.
    yay.

6'2", father is shorter. I wanted to start earlier than that, but it didn't work out.

Yes I know another experienced person.

I've met a lot of ppl in different areas including trainnig & bodybuilding.

Is that a crime to have met a lot of ppl with real experience?

    Someone

You should now concentrate on learning proper form to all exercises along with proper eating.

Ease into the heavy lifting & don't push it too fast, it will come slowlyas you don't want to injure yourself

Gr81 is a good dude but on this one ask your doc 1st. It is harmless to do so and we can help you out when you post the doc's advice.

Weight lifting is good for you at that age. Just make sure you are doing the proper form. As well, you should do more than get "flatter abs" and do "arm weights." Do big compound exercises. Here is a routine I suggest to beginners. It is to be done three days per week:

    Full Squats 3 x 8-12
    Romanian Deadlifts 2 x 8-12

    Deadlifts 3 x 8-12
    Bent Rows 2 x 8-12

    Bench Press 3 x 8-12
    Military Press 2 x 8-12

    Decline Situps 3 x 8-12

You may want to start even lighter (Like 15 reps), to make sure you learn the proper form on everything.
