Kind of lost....

I posted this on the newbie forum, but it seems I may get some better/more responces here. This "training" forum seemed the best place, I thought it was probably a little more broad than the others.

Anyways, hi everybody, my name is Brad and I'm 16 years old. I'm about 6'0" tall, and about 160 pounds. I consider myself very phisically active. I play soccer and ultimate frisbee at least weekly with friends. I also take part in my HS marching band, which to many people's suprise is a lot of work, about 2 hrs. a day.

Anyways, over the past 2 months or so, I've been dwelling about starting to weight train and increase my amount of excercise. I've been to local stores and have looked online at models of machines and also looked at sites like this one. But at the moment I feel kind of lost. I've figured out my goals of what I want to accomplish.

My main goals are to:
1) Increase endurance/flexibilty.
2) Add body mass.
3) Increase strength/range.

There are also some minor ones, but those are the main 3. And of course, I would like to do these safely. I'm not interested in completing my goals in 2 weeks, and then slack off. I'm wanting these goals to be more long term. One thing I probably should do better though is eat. My eating habits aren't bad by any means, but I probably don't get enough of the core things needed for these kind of results. As most typical teenagers, I like anything fatty or sweet, and I know that is not good. I don't eat fast-food much but I do snack a lot. So basically, I'm also looking for a good diet, that will help me achieve my goals in the safest/most effecient way possible.

Can anyone give me any advice on just where to start? There are tons of guides on the internet, but I know everyone has a different way of training. So I thought I would try and recieve some more one-on-one answers.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

-Brad

That was a good article gr81, I'm going to keep that bookmarked.

Umm, as for equipment, I've looked around at stores/newspapers/online etc. at different systems. A big debate for me at the moment is whether to go with free weights or resistance weight systems. I haven't really been set on one particular set-up though. I'm personally leaning towards the resistance weight ones. I've also thought about joining a club, but I would personally rather have my own stuff and just be able to work-out at home.

If I wanted to, I have the time to excercise everyday, but I know that isn't a good way to start out. I would probably start around 3 days a week, and work on cardio about 2 days, (Possible schedual could be: Weights/Cardio/Relax/Weights/Cardio/Relax/Weights).

I understand the wanting to train at home type of attitude, believe me I do, but I would reccommend juts getting a cheap gym membership. you most likely are not going to be able to afford all the equipment you will need, and if you end up settling for one of those crappy home gym set ups, your WO's will suffer. Free weights are absolutely vital man. You'll need access to a power rack and a real bench as well. If you are gonna do it, do it right. I have never met a serisou accomplished lifter or even a lifter I respected that trained at home on some silly little setup, ya feel me. If youare gonna do it, do it right. now if you can afford to spend thousands on some sicc home gym, then by all means, but you get where I am comin from.. peace
