I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn't do ab's when bulking as that could result in the ab's bulking. If this is true what other exercises should you do in order to strengthen the trunk core. Isn't this a must to help prevent injury's from heavy exercises like deadlifts

Remember that your "core" refers to more than just your abs or six pack. There are your obliques, transverse and spinal erectors to think about as well.
And yes, you should be doing them. They are vital for support and stability.
