    Skull Crushers vs Back Scratchers

Any thoughts on seated Back Scratchers for your Tri's instead of Skull Crushers ? It seems safer since if you fail you save your head.

It has never bothered my elbows either.

    Thanks for the input.

Sorry, I guess that is my term for it.
If you are seated on a bench, you hold a dumbell over your head with the palms of your hands facing up. You then lower it down behind your head (like you were going to scratch your back) and then press it back up.
It works the long head of the tri just like a skull crusher would.

Is there a different name for it ? ? ?

    It's called a Triceps Extension....Shown Here.
I use em all the time (I'm often without a spotter), and love 'em

overhead DB Tricep Extensions are a great stretch-muscle movement. great ROM with that exercise, I always do them last using 1 arm at a time...

this burly dude at my gym does them one armed switching arms back and forth with the same weights continuosly for about 20 minutes, then lies on a bench and does the same thing, and i'm thinking to myself i know you didn't get huge doing those one arm tricep etensions for 20 minutes at a time

is he a juicehead, aztecwolf? The biggest guy in my gym does the same thing. He'll be doing stiff legged deadlifts with 135, hack squats with 2 plates on each side etc. When i watch him lift you can see he is barely exerting himself...meanwhile i'm hack squatting 4 plates on each side and sldl'ing 315 busting my ass and knowing i'll never be anywhere near his physique (unless my dark side takes over).

Both versions of the lying version-to the forehead and to the back of the head, are known as French Presses or lying triceps extensions. The seated version's only known as seated triceps extensions. There should be different names to avoid confusion between to the forehead and to back of the head versions, but there aren't. I've always found that extensions behind the head are much more effective and also don't hurt the elbows and joints the way the other version does.

Holding a dumbell with both hands and lowering it behind your head is just another version of the same thing, maybe even better for the stretch and for the more comfortable grip. For the barbell version, try using an E-Z curl bar. For the seated version, lean against the back of a scott bench to avoid back stress.

I've never found one-arm versions of lying or sitting extensions to be as good, but that's just me.

Another very good but less-known version is to lying barbell triceps extensions with an E-Z curl bar on a decline bench.
