I know that sports announcers get all googly-eyed when they see recievers/runningback in football pull out a 4.2-ish. So IMO, a 5.0sec 40 would seem about average, at least for a moderatly-conditioned person. I'll have to try this myself, and see what I can pull.

In HS I ran the 40 in 4.7, but I was a lot lighter then. Probably slower now.

Meters and yards are really close. Both are around 3ft. One is a bit longer, dont recal.. So maybe slightly over 100yards.

i am 19 and i ran it in 4.65 on grass in my soccer cleats. the track coach happened to hear about it and he wanted me to do some relays for the team. 4.5 and lower is sprinter speed but anything around 4.9 is considered aobut average.

4.5 and below are super fast. Most will have the wrong idea about average people running the 40, because all we hear about is college and nfl players running super fast 40's.

as a rookie deion sanders ran a 4.17!
and I just heard during the olympics that Maurice Greene runs a 3.95

I havent done it since 5th grade. People tell me i have some wicked acceleration, but over distances i dont seem to speed up. In say 100 yd dash, I can usually rip anyone out of the hole but then they catch up halfway and slowly beat me. Im guessing its my running form.
