    Question cardio

I'm a female athlete (soccer) and to train and also lose some weight on the side I run 20-30 minutes a day getting in about 2-3 miles. I do this three days in a row, take a day off, and then do it two days in a row and so on. I lift about two days a week. I have a friend who is concerned that I am hurting myself and is convinced that someone will tell me this. He thinks I do way too much cardio. If you are going to tell me this, please explain why, because I am extremely skeptical.

quick Q? how active is your friend just out of curiousity, b/c its always sedintary pople that say things like this.. lol. to answer your Q thou, diet is going to be your key in acheiving weight loss goals. Soccer is a great source of cardio, a much better source of cardio than running IMO. If you are running every day and going to soccer practice everyday as well, I would say thats not condusive to losing weight while trying to maintaing LBM, but to say something is "bad" is silly. Few things are absolutely bad, as such. You have your rest days which is good, and no one knows your body better than you so I don't see why its bad. He doesn't seem like he is keeping in mind what type of aerobic shape you need to be in for soccer either so I wouldn't pay much attention.

Your friend, although meaing well, has unfounded concerns.
Your workout is not excessive, but it is good that you are taking a rest day to let your body rebuild. For excessive, look at long distance runners. They log anywhere from 70 to 100 miles a week.

That being said, the key to losing weight is what you eat though.
Getting "cut", or losing weight, is 20% lifting and cardio and 80% nutrition.

the running that you are doing is not excessive. but a more intensive weight training program will provide you with better fat loss results. running does not increase the RMR as does increasing LBM nor does it have the same positive effects on the endocrine system...I would lift weights for 3 days and run for 2 on non-weight training days...
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

You hit it on the head when you described yourself as an athlete in training. Your friend is wrong. Period. Not excessive, but LAM is right when he says for fat loss it's not quite enough.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.
