    sets??? and burn??

    Have a set question. I have never really been sure how many sets are right for me 2, 4, 5? so i usually do three. I was looking at a workout on Truly Huge and they say to do 5 sets of every exercise for the first 3 weeks, then three for a couple of weeks and then two for the last two weeks of the cycle. Then take a week off and start again with 5 sets??????

    Burn? I hear people talk about feeling the burn. I never feel the "burn" even when I do heavy weights and more sets???

    You want to feel a burn.....Here's a good way. Put on the normal weight that you would squat for 10 reps (which should be hard).....but don't stop at 10...keep going get 11, 12..if you can't do any more take a couple deep breathes (but don't put the weight down - keep it on your shoulders) Crank out another one then another - then a few deep breathes........all the way to 20. If you are truely using the weight that you would normally use to do 10 reps - after you do 20 reps - you'll feel the burn.

    Disclaimer: I'm fairly new to bodybuilding.

    I do each set to failure. I try to use enough weight to get just below 12, 10, 8, 6 reps. If I can actually do that number of sets, I add a little weight. I've read that you don't have to rep to failure, but I've been getting great results from doing it that way. Your milage may vary. As you can see, I do 4 sets per exercise. In truth you should generally do more sets for larger muscles than you do for smaller ones. I've chosen to do 4 sets, period. Like I said, it works for me.

    As for the burn, I was informed by a wise poster (you know who you are) that feeling the burn doesn't mean much. Make sure that you take 5g of Creatine each day. This inhibits the uptake of lactic acid to your musles (which causes the burn). That way you stop doing reps when your muscles fail, not when the burn becomes to intense.

    Good question, one that i've asked myself. I find that doing 4 sets is enough for one exercise, and is slightly more effective than 3 in regards to exhausting the muscle. However, i'm doing a total of 7 sets, but broken up into 2 different exercises, to keep the intensity high. I do 4 sets of one exercise for a muscle, followed by 3 sets of another exercise for the same muscle, with no more than one minute rest between sets, with at least some of those sets done to failure, where i can't do another rep no matter what.

    In regard to bodybuilding i equate a burn with superior muscle stimulation, and think that it's important. If you're not getting a burn, there's something wrong with your intensity IMO. It's not only the amount of weight or doing a lot of sets but rather real intensity AKA quality done for a relatively short amount of time and few sets.

    Another possibility is that you're not doing high enough reps - nothing against low reps for some, but my experience is that optimal muscle stimulation's achieved with higher reps. Best number of reps varies with the individual - experiment with higher reps-for me i like 12 reps/set for each set. An additional consideration: i've found that using cables and/or leverage machines provides a more constant tension that IMO gives better muscle stimulation AKA burn.

    Other ways to get a burn: supersets of two exercises for the same muscle, and something mentioned above - doing as many reps as you can, pausing just a few seconds without putting the weight down and then doing a few more.
