    Back injury from deadlifts?

Ok, soo... Today was back day and I wanted to go as heavy with my dead's as I did last time even though I wasn't really managing too well. My form was off and I knew it but I continued anyway, and on my last rep I got a sharp pain in my lower back spine/tailbone, not sure. I am ok when I stand up, but sitting and bending over slightly make me moan and groan in pain, it's not excruciating pain, but it is definately worrying me. What did I do and how do I fix it?
    I can do it

Take it easy by resting your lower back, maybe even take an ice bath.
    yay.

You'll be fine. Just lay off the lower back for a week or so and then ease back (haha get it?) into it slowly.
    yay.

i had a similar type of pain from coming down wrong after making a catch playing football. All i did was take it easy for the rest of that day, and drank a few cups of camomille tea, which is also a muslve relaxer, and slept on my back that night. Woke up and the pain was just about gone.

    good luck.

Thanks for the responses guys and girls! I never had a real injury from lifting before, so I didn't know what to do. I was also told to take magnesium as a muscle relaxant, which I do have on hand. My mom rubbed in some of the muscle relaxant cream and it helped, so the fact that it helped means it was just a muscle that I hurt and nothing serious right?

Sounds like a disc.. The dead lift can be a killer on the lower lumbar, be careful with these.

BTW, do back injuries have any effect on bladder control? I have to RUN to the bathroom...

You can get a good look at the spine from an MRI.. And you can herniate a disc where it will have an effect on controlling going to the bathroom. It all depends which nerves were damaged and how bad they were damaged from disc compression. Not saying this is what happened to you, but you may want to get it checked out.

Only as a last resort.. surgery.. But first rest, antiinflammatories (steroids).. But if you messed up your back that bad you would be in so much pain right now it would pretty much be intolerable.

You're probably healing. You can stick with the motrin, be sure not to do anything to aggravate the injury. Rest.

When you feel better, you may want to try some lower back stretches..

DEFINATELY not doing deadlifts anytime soon

Which other exercises should I avoid? How soon can I be back in the gym? Must I wait til the pain is completely gone, or just mostly?

Forget the deadlift. Be careful of bent over bb row, and squats.

You should be able to lift when the pain is mostly gone, just be aware of the lowerback when you lift, if you feel any pain or discomfort, stop.

Right now I can not even do cardio. Should I consider the deadlift gone completely from my routine? Both regular and stiff-legged?

I guess I'll worry about alternatives later..

Both are out. When you feel better you can try hyper extensions for lower back.
