Small question about those new types of gyms

I was just wondering what you guys though about those new gyms that are popping up everywhere. You like curves and fitness for her. Well Over here in Moncton NB, they have one that's geared toward both sexes and me and my gf are thinking of joining.

I way over 250 pounds for 6' and my legs are starting to feel sore, I need to loose weight, would this be a good place to start and build my cardio???

just wondering you know i'll start with that and then maybe i'll get hooked and want to go real deal and hit the weights

cardio and weights together are excellent for losing weight. just because you are overweight doesnt mean you cant lift.

I've never been in one so I don't know the set up inside.

I would only join a gym that has a decent amount of free weights. machines should be used to complement a free weight based training program...

those gyms are basically predicated on circuit training with machines, i would get a membership to a regular gym and do the same thing but with freeweights. Circuit training is great cause you get the beni's of both cardio and weight training at once

I like my normal Bally's. I can yell, grunt, scream, do whatever I want... and even lift weights if I felt the urge!

my wife is waiting for her Curves for woman to expire so she can go to a real gym with me.

you cant raise the weight, it is good if you are skinny and want to tone but if you want to get muscular or lose weight, more muscle = higher metabolism = thinner/less BF

Cardio is good for getting the heart pumping, and to sweat things out. People just assume though that throwing around some iron means they will turn into Ahnold or something. Big myth. Like others said, I would recommend you get a combination of free weights and cardio. Why? Lets put it this way. Cardio raises your metabolism while you work out...that's where the calorie burn comes in. Now, on average, the increased metabolism from cardio can last from 20 minutes to a few hours. Weight training doesn't raise your metabolism so much during the workout, but it keeps it at an elevated state for up to 48 hours. Each pound of muscle you put on your skeleton will equal a faster road to fat loss. I'm not saying to go hyper with the weights, but try to consider having a regimen which has both weights and cardio. If you have never worked out, spend the cash and get a personal trainer to help you set up a program and show you how to do some exercises. Better to learn how to hoist the weights properly, then cause an injury cause you are doing things wrong.
