Confused Another Chest question

I know this probably has been asked a million times before, but, when it comes to the size and the definition of the chest, which would help the upper (below the neck) and inbetween (so that the two muscles visually connect, if you guys (and girls) know what I mean)) Develop? I been workin on them for around 2 months now, and see no visual gains. The strength is there, just no mass.

Another comment which will caused me to get flamed: My goal is for a chest resembling the size of Bolo Yeung.

hey, welcome to IM! the first thing youll notice about us is that people around here get annoyed by the "how do i build up only my upper chest" or "how do i get my chest to grow together" questions. they come up about every 5 days and all hell breaks loose for the next 24 hours. basically it ends up being everybody vs this "Johnnny" character.

ill save you the grief by getting here first. it is impossible to target just one area of the chest. all parts will get worked at once, because the chest is one large muscle (well, two, but ones on top of the other, pectoralis major and pectoralis minor) so when it contracts, the whole thing contracts. not just a part of it. anyway, the only way to get a part of the muscle to grow is to get the whole muscle to grow. if youre not growing youre not eating enough

part 1 - agree with dbd that they contract as a whole. however, you can place emphasis on the upper/lower part of yout chest, with incline/decline.

part 2 - eat

part epilogue - welcome to im too! sssshhh dbd or else he may come in here, post a couple threads, and we'll all be stuck in his shit again! makes me think why he signed up only is august 2004 and he has reached 2600+ posts! a true post whore

Personally, I like to "hit" my chest from different angles thus I do incline, flat, and decline but I don't do those excercises to build different parts of my chest.

Your pectoral muscle is one muscle, you can't build different areas of one muscle. Your chest is no different than your bicep, lat, etc.

The pectoralis major is comprised of two heads: the sternal and clavicular heads. The clavicular head is the upper chest that people refer to. However, because of its shared insertion point with the sternal head, the two muscles contract together. Therefore, they are functionally the same muscle.

Many will argue that although this is true, you can emphasize the clavicular head with incline movements. I disagree, and say that any progress you think you see in the clavicular head is actually the anterior deltoid causing an illusion of a larger clavicular head, because the anterior deltoid is certainly recruited to a greater extent during incline presses than during a flat bench press. Either way, the goal is achieved, and the upper part of your chest does appear to grow.

You believe what you want. I believe in the principles of anatomy. However, it is damned near impossible to change anyone's mind about this topic.

Just play it safe, do some incline presses in addition to flat bench presses, and don't worry about the debate. Either way, incline presses are well worth incorporating into your routine.

upper: flat bench, incline press, incline fly
inner: CG lean-forward dips, CG bench, machine fly, pec deck, high pulley cable cross-over.

COWPIMP's above statement is without a doubt the post of the year

"in the howling bleeding nights, the dogs plunge into the Volga and swim desperately to gain the other bank. The nights of Stalingrad are a terror for them. Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; only men endure."
