I don't think there is a theory on training back and shoulders on the same day.People usually will setup a schedule to fit their preference. Many will do chest and shoulders one day and arms and back another. For me, my shoulder day is quite long. I do delts/lats and traps on one day. Since my chest day is a bit shorter, I toss back in with that. I'm actually doing only one back exercise right now though, and that is dead lifts. So I just work 3 sets of those in with my chest. Again though, it is all in your preference. The main thing is to allow adequate recover time between muscle groups.

In my own personal findings through trying different splits... and of course this only applies to myself and may be not be what applies to anyone else... I have found that Delts, Back, Chest and Legs are muscle groups that I train so intensely that I give them almost there own day. I mean that I will add a small muscle group with them; ie. Delts with Traps but never do I put two huge groups together. A lot of people do and if that works for you it's cool. I know that after something like Delts, I am so fatigued from hitting them, just the thought of doing a full, intense Back wo would be unreal. Just how it goes for me.
