    Overtraining?

    Hey,

I worked out my chest and triceps on tuesday and I can still feel the "pain" from my workout. I assumed I really worked my chest because I did 4 sets of bench presses, 3 sets of chest flyes, and 3 sets of high cable crossovers. I lifted as much weight as a could for each exercise and did 6-8 reps for each set.
I rested for 1 minute. Have I overtrained? Thanks

so you worked out chest and tris 2 days ago and they are still sore?... is there something wrong with that? that is by no means a sign of overtraining more likely to be a sign that you had an intense workout!

10 sets for chest is fine, some guys (HIT'ers) advocate only 3-4 sets whilst others (volume guys) say you need more like 20, i think the 8-12 range is fine for most.. or you can go one better and periodize... like do 3-4 sets week 1 to failiure, 5-9 week 2 to failiure, 10-14 week 3 (last 2 sets to failiure), 15-20 week 4 (last sets only to failiure), then week 5 up the weights and drop it down to 3-4 sets again

then again that is pretty advanced stuff, if your just starting out sticking to around 10 sets for the major muscles is plenty, if you are having real overtraining symptoms (drowsiness, innsomnia, craping, tiredness, loss of appitite etc..) then try cutting back on the workload a little and see if it helps matters

Most pure HIT guys advocate 3-4 sets. Depending on the intensity - if it were marginally high- 10 sets is overtraining in my estimation.

There is over-reaching and overtraining. Over-reaching is the result of 1 or 2 workouts where you have beat the hell out of yourself. Typically the symptoms are just increased soreness and fatigue. Overtraining is a condition of chronic overreaching that leads to long-term physiological changes such as increased BP anbd resting heart rate in addition to the above mentioned symptoms. It sounds like you have over-reached, just cut the weights back or increase rest between sets next tine and see if that helps.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

I would say you over did it your first time out...hence the prolonged soreness. Down the road a bit, once your muscles are more accustomed to working out, 10 sets may be fine for you. So, it's not "overtraining" in the typical sense of the word...you just did too much, too soon!

if this your first time i think 10 sets for the chest is probably a reasonable place to start, the most important thing is that you learn correct form. maybe try dropping the intensity a bit though. once you get into the swing of things you can then think about increasing the intensity and dropping the volume.

I would say don't go to failure on all 10 sets. Goto failure on maybe the last set of each exercise or something like that.

overtraining from a 1st session? no chance! stop bein a wuzz and learn to live with the pain, you'll start to enjoy the feeling after a while, i know i love it because its a sign that i've had an intense workout, if my muscles aren't aching the next day i know i haven't trained hard enough

Yep...I know the feeling. Went out with a buddy a few months ago for the first time and did about the same workout you did. I was swore for almost a week. Your body will adapt...mine did. Now I'm hooked.

10 sets isnt overtraining if you work out like, as young D would say, like a WUZZ

Of course, if you work out like Duncan does, 10 sets will make you pass out and put you in a long-term coma.

Its all relative to the intensity.

If you goto complete muscular failure on all 10 sets, then it is probably overtraining. If you go to near failure, then you can probably get away with it.
