Dad is overtrianing his legs while hes got arthritis
my dad, is going crazy with training.
4 days a week (no rest days: mon - thurs)this is his routine: warmup bike: 5 mins leg extensions military press barbell curl incline walking at highest grade he has arthritus in the knees, and thinks this is helping him doing this every day mon- thurs.. I try explaining it to him, but ofcoarse "you think you know it all". so basically he said hes found improvement but ofcoarse noobie gains. I figure in a while his knee will ditiriarate at a faster pace and he will increase the frequency of his workouts. So anny suggestions on how to dela with this? |

Get rid of the leg extensions - he needs to be doing weight bearing exercise to protect his knee joints. Proper squats would be much better for him. That means without any weight on his back - front squats or no weight.
Make sure he has back support for his military press or substitute other shoulder exercises. If he's walking on a treadmill he should be okay as long as his gait and shoes are proper and he's not hanging onto the machine. Odds are if he's walking at a high incline he's hanging onto the machine and removing any benefit. If those are the only days he has available and he's not killing himself then I wouldn't have a problem with it. At an advanced age, proper form and protection from injury is everything. His knee will improve with proper training and increased mobility. He should be stretching too daily. I have found with my clients with arthritis yoga is a great benefit. |

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.
The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do. |

Just let them go until they get hurt. I know it sounds evil but it isn't as evil as you would think just watch them and make sure they are not working out after their first injury occurs. Then you will have a problem if they do that.
I have a friend who I have been trying to stop from over training for 2 years now. He goes to the gym and maxes out 6 times and ignores every other part of his body FIVE, yes FIVE times a week, plus FIVE times a week at school. I am just waiting for him to get hurt. If your dad is usually reasonable I would reccomend talking to him about what he is doing and show him some sources on what overtraining is, why you know he is doing it, and what it could cause for him (in this case the worsening of a painful condition). |
