Toning is primarily a function of your body fat levels. Diet is really going to be of prime importance.

However, in terms of training, you want to workout the same way as someone who wants to get huge. Believe me, she is not going to get huge. It takes a lot of work and strict adherance to a diet to achieve a lot of size, especially for a female.

I recommend she start by doing a full body routine 3 days per week. Here is one that I often recommend:

    Deadlifts 2 x 8-12
    Olympic Squats 2 x 8-12

    Bent Rows 2 x 8-12
    Chinups 2 x 8-12

    Bench Press 2 x 8-12
    Military Press 2 x 8-12

    Decline Situps 2 x 12-15
    Hyperextensions 2 x 12-15

    Standing Calf Raises 2 x 12-15

Two big misconceptions you and your girlfriend need to get over.

    1) That a woman lifting weights and not using steriods will get "huge".

    2) That you can "tone" fat.

P.S I am not saying your girlfriend is fat. What I am saying is women, just like men, need to focus on building muscle in their workouts, which will then translate into less fat and then better ongoing fat burning capabilities.

He never said that she would get huge. He also never said that it was possible to 'tone fat', just that she wanted to become toned...
