    personally,

the only way to get my calves to grow is use a variety rep ranges and weights. i do a few really heavy sets, and then i train to failure with a medium weight and rep number.

but....... then a work up a crap.. LoL!
workin to get r-r-ripped to shreds.

high reps usually do the trick for me...
standing calf raise 1-2 sets x 20-25 reps
seated calf raise 1-2 sets x 20-25 reps
    and i sumtimes do
leg press calf raise 1-2 sets x 20-25 reps
sumtimes i also like to incorporate drop sets into that routine too.it usually gets them burning nicely for me.and once your done your calf workout and your calves are really fried, i sumtimes take one of the stability/balance boards and try to stand on that. i don't think i've ever done it before but its pretty painful for me. especially when ur trying to stand on ur toes.

I recently found the best way to get my calves to burn. I dont know what you guys will have to say about this but with the seated calf raise I like to squeeze my calf as hard as i can at the top for a few seconds. That burns like no other. Half the time I am affraid I am not going to be able to rerack the simple calf raise machine lol. I think the trick is sqeeze the calf.

I usually do about 3 sets of 2 exercises, high reps, followed by two sets of just one exercise, super heavy, maybe 2-3 complete reps then partials to failure...30-60 sec rest between partial sets

Try some heavy work, light work, and plyometrics. See which one gives the best results and focus on it.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
