Never do any form of lifting that causes pain. Make sure you know the difference between muscle soreness and pain.

I have lifted when sore in the past, but it's probably not the best idea. If you just started lifting, then you can probably get away with it. It's very hard to overreach, and therefore overtrain, if you are new to resistance training.

What if a muscle that assists in the lift is still sore? Like say you are planning on working chest, but your lats are sore. What then?

Then you haver poorly planned out your routine LOL.

It can be done but idealy you want to plan out a routine to where you can work everything without any soreness getting in the way. But sometimes it happens and you just need to deal with it or take a break...move things around...do what your body tells you to do.

I'd wait till most of the soreness is gone to hit the muscle again. It's ok to hit other muscles in the meantime; you can do lats while the pecs are sore.

I hit my new 1RM on bench with slightly sore lats. I now believe it didnt matter that they were a little bit sore.
