losing the fat, cardio or weights?
ok i'm to this forum so if i'm asking a stupid question or posting in the wrong place, please forgive me.
I'm 6 ft, 198 lbs. I have naturally broad shoulders and ok body but there's some extra fat i would really like to get rid of. I read a few articles online and the logic "if you burn more calories than you use, then you'll lose the fat". So how much calories do normal weight sessions burn? and how does it compare to cardio exercises? |

Diet.
Cardio burns calories during that time and a short time afterwards. Weight lifting performed to increase muscle mass, will burn calories during that time and a short time afterwards, as well as create muscle that sits there and burns calories through the day to maintain its existence. Diet is first however always. At 198 though you dont have much weight to lose at all, especially if you feel you have broad structure. |

As others have said, diet is the most important item relative to losing fat.
In terms of training, I feel resistance training is far more effective at helping you burn fat. By increasing muscle mass, you drastically raise your basal metabolic rate. You will burn more calories around the clock. With that said, I think both are great. If you combine the two, then you will get the best results. Cardio and resistance training both burn plenty of calories and leave your metabolism elevated for quite a while after the training ends. |

Diet is key, but weight training is just as important as cardio, as Mudge was saying when you increase your muscle mass you raise your metabolism 24/7, cardio only burns calories when you're doing it.
