20 sets for a muscle

i was wondering, why does everyone think 20 sets for a muscle is too much? has everyone tried this and proved that it did not work for them? and eveyrone is different so this would have a different affect on everyone. some people might not benefit from this, but some might grow better this way? are there any facts that around 20 sets for a muscle is bad? for some people it might take alot more sets for them to grow right? sorry if i sound like a complete idiot i was just pondering this and thought i would post something about it. dont flame me too hard lol

you mean apart from the amount of time you would spend in the gym?

What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

I can do 20sets for chest or back or legs. I can do it for shoulders occasionally but defenitly not for arms. like everythnig volume can work for you if cycled in and out of a program appropriatly and workout frequency and intensity is accounted for.

20 sets is okay, as long as you stop way short of failure. However, I do like to use some level of intensity in my workouts or they aren't enjoyable.

John Defendis would do way more than 20 Sets/Muscle. I don't necessarily agree with that. But to each his own. You can read about John's "Intensity or Insanity" here: http://www.defendis.com/flash/index.html Go to the Hardcore Bodybuilding Articles.

I have done 20 sets( including warm ups) for the back during high volume periods. But I would never think of anything approaching that for chest or arms.

when i was younger.. about 16.. i did about 20+ sets everytime i worked out on a certain muscle group, being that i was chubby i didnt see results right away, but i belive doing 20+ reps during my workouts got me to where i am today and i found it helped not only with my muscle gains, but also helped my endurance alot more so that when i entered my bulking stage i could do more than what i normally could becuase i was so used to doing so many sets and using alot of volume.

I have done high volume and liked it sometimes when I was younger, but for the most part I feel it is abusive to the body, connective tissues especially. A recipe for disaster for those not genetically gifted.

if you lift hard, you wont need 20 sets. 9 sets of chest two nights ago tired me out more than enough and im still feeling it today.

The real question is, is there any evidence that supports 20 sets as a constant is good? I used to do enormously high volume and found myself constantly overtrained (eyes twitching, 10 hours of sleep a day and still feeling tired), outrageously hungry, fat and weak.

Like these guys said, as an exception it may have some value, but who has time for 20 sets for one body part ?

i agree with this

i cycle my volume right now, one day i might bust out a lot of sets (15-20) but only hit true failiure a couple of times in my workout, next week i'll cut it down to 5 sets all beyond failiure

no 2 workouts are ever the same, i feel this is a very good approach if your wanting both strength and muscle

peace

I do all my sets to failure or very close save for a few warmup sets. Generally I can't do more than 10 or 12 sets this way for chest or quads before I feel like passing out though. I've done 15 sets close to failure or failing for tris/bis one time, it felt pretty good afterwards. It varies by workout. Some days your just not there mentally, when I'm really pissed at something I can just keep lifting, and if your on any anabolic cycles your body can go more volume without overtraining, provided your eating enough. Whatever works is pretty much the general rule. John Defendis was a madman.

back for the first time....
