the point of bench shirts is?

Why do people use these. Wouldnt be just like someone lying down with u and pushing up the weight with u? ultimately any extra weight which u couldnt bench that u can with the shirt is oviously the direct result of added leverage from the shirt, how is this beneficial to muscle growth?

I believe the original intent was to protect the shoulders and pectorals while pressing heavier weight.

Aparently the Blue Bunny discovered an alternate use no one ever considered.

The purpose is for powerlifting competitions. With those, it, unfortunately, is all about who can move the most weight, not necessarily who is the strongest competitor. Shirts help you to move more weight, but aren't a sign of true strength. They are also used to prevent injuries, but, in my opinion, if your body can't handle the weight, then you just aren't meant to lift it. After all, this is about pushing yourself to your limits, not pushing your equipment to its limits.

Yes the equipment was originally designed to prevent injuries. As time progressed, the equipment evolved. It does add massive amount of weight to your lifts. Different federations allow different variations or equipment, and this is the cause of much division and tension between the powerlifting federations and a lot of division and bashing between lifters of different federations. Some federations only allow single ply equipment, some allow double, some allow denim equipment, some don't....and so on. Companies and lifters keep trying to improve the equipment to get more out of it in their lifts while still staying within the regulations of their respective federations, or they move to a different federation. It is truly sad that there is so much division and actual anger and hate amongst the lifters over these rules, but until there is one set standard for allowed equipment, it will continue.

And for those who say that you shouldn't wear the equipment, it would be like showing up with a knife to a gunfight. As long as equipment is allowed, you will have to use it to have a chance of competing.

They are extremely tight shirts, needing another person to help with it on and off. You can't do it yourself. They are so tight that they give 'spring' to pushing the bar up. Knee wraps do the same thing for squatting. It's not that they support the knees, but that they help the squatter spring up out of the hole.

exactly, and that is why I say a bodybuilder has no purpose using knee wraps.

When a person becomes stronger in a portion of the rep it carries over to the rest, allowing the person to ultimately use more weight.

But a bench shirt has typically no place in BB. Its purpose is for powerlifting "safety."
