can i still train at 42 like a did at 28

i have always kept fit in my late 20's i trained with weights and was happy with the outcome . i did this for 10 years i stopped for aprox four years when all i did was cycle i now and am doing weights again and want to continue to because i can commit to healthy and weighty lifestyle , my wife as encourage me back to doing the weights but with the modern gyms etc i need some serious advice as to the way i should hit the weights basically all i am asking is do i go about it with the attitude of no pain no gain or do i need a softly softly aproach or build up , i have been back in the gym for 2 months now and find i can still push myself but i find after a good work out i am really tired ie yawning tired i eat the right foods . i just need some advice before i do myself some damage , i hope someone out there understands were i am coming from . thanks dennis

I hope not ! LOL I am almost 50 and training heavier and harder than in my 20's and I thought i was doing pretty good back then

You will need a different split than what you were using in the earlier days probably . To give your body a chance to recooperate , plus might need some supplements you didn't have or take back then . I probably couldn't live with glucosimine chondroitin , creatine and cytomax !!!!! LOL

And I'm 52 and train harder now then I did in my 20' and 30's. Just start slow and maybe lightweights to start. Then go for it.

Depends on what kind of shape you are in.. Are you over weight? Do you have a gut or any love handles? .. I would say to start off with mixed weights/cardio. Aim for a decent level of fitness, achieve any weight loss needed, get your diet in order. You can adjust your schedule as you go along, slowly cutting back on the cardio once other goals are achieved. I am 43, I started working out back in late Sept, early Oct.. I am just now switching to a program more dedicated to growth than fitness.

But Id say SlimShady's advise is the best anyone could give you at "our" age.

Looking at your avatar, I can't wait until I get to your age.

Wow gwcaton, you look pretty amazing for your age, and you came a long way from that rotator cuff surgery. But I would suggest hitting the forearms a bit. But you seem to have everything else.
Im 20. 6'3'' 235 lbs. Want to get to 8% body fat, +315 bench, +500 squat, and reach a weight between 230-240.

Most likely you will need to place new emphasis on warm-ups. As well, there may be certain exercises that you want to avoid. For example, skullcrushers can be particularly nasty to one's elbows. For the most part, you should be able to train with a high level of intensity in a fairly safe manner.

Make sure you get back into it slowly though. I highly suggest a couple weeks of bodyweight exercises followed by a few weeks of light lifting (~15 repetitions per set) before you start going heavier.

At 45 I can say from an injury last summer it takes us old farts a while to recover. Even with proper diet the repair is slower. Do not ignore that little voice when it says "This might be past the line" ... your body knows what it can and cannot do. I didn't listen and got sat down for bit.

Robert duval was telling his partner a story in the movie colors. It went something like this:

A young bull was walking with an older bull when they crossed a hill and saw a heard of cows. The young bull looked at all those cows and said "Hey ... lets run down there and fuck one of them cows" ... the old bull looked over at the youngster, chuckled and said "Naahhhh. Lets just walk down and fuck 'em all"

Just take your time and enjoy. Welcome to IM!!!

See thats really the secret. You have to pick up an instrument, then you will be young forever

All bullkiddin aside, Bonecrusher and Cowpimp added some excellent advise. At "our" age, you do have to listen to your body a bit more closely.

At 49 I without a doubt train harder then in my 20's. Shit, I didn't weight train in my 20's . I started at 33 and I train much harder now. My advice mirrors what every one else has said. Start slow, as it's much easier to tear muscles. Do higher reps with lighter weights and focus on form for a few months. This will serve to acclimatize your body, and strengthen your connective tissue. After that gradually go heavier. One thing you will find is your body does not recover as fast as it did when you were younger. If you do get hurt, allow plenty of time to recover. The weights will wait for you .

Great tip! "take it slow" higher reps. We don't want any pulled muscles that could take us down for a couple weeks or more? Thanks for all tips. adore:

At 42 I'm getting better results, getting less injuries, and lifting heavier than when I was 20 But my diet is 100% better and I actually warm up now

I am by no means an expert, but I found that by working my calves three times week and adding 5 pounds per week that my calves exploded. I do 5 set for 13-20 reps per set.

What works for one person may not work for others, but it's an idea.
