    Bust up Index Finger

During training yesterday, while putting a few 35lbs plates back after benching i caught my left index finger imbetween 2 plates while putting them back...under the nail it is now black, and the worst thing is i found it really hard to sleep last night and i literally couldn't eat.. because of the pain. I never knew something so small could hurt like that. its now swollen...any ideas of what i could do to stop swelling and reduce pain so i can get back to working out?..im supposed to work back tomorrow but i doubt i will be able to grip things too well

THAT sux big time...Happened to me a while back...I felt like an idiot (not saying u should), but while i was actually still at the gym, pride made me continue my w/0, but when I got home OMG!!!!! Ice it, ice ice ice! Its the only way I managed to sleep (had black nail syndrome too!) without feeling like every heart beat was gonna make my finger explode! I kept a flexible ice pack thingy on it even at night.

yea..i do feel like an idiot. and I ALSO carried on with my w/o . I put it on ice for a bit...how long did it take to be alright until you could use it 'normally' again? also is there anything to reduce swelling etc...like Ibrufen or something like that...anything else? I fell asleep eventually..After my body just gave up, i was so tired.

I used extra strenght ibuprofen, but I have to be honest it didnt do much...It was REALLY sore for about 72 hours but I went back to train the next day (once again, pride!!), within about a week, it was just a blue/black/purple/yellow nail, no more pain, but if I bump that finger, especially near the nail, even now, its sensitive!!

I worked construction for like ever. Can't count the number of times I hit the wrong nail. Fricken hate that ...

My solution was to poke a very small hole in the nail at the outer area of the bruise and let it drain. Takes away the pressure at the time when it happens. Worked for me ... ... most time the nail is so jacked up it was gonna come off anyway.

Exactly! I once used a tiny jewlers drill bit (rolling it back and forth between my index finger and thumb) to drill a small hole in a fingernail. Keep paper towels handy. If it's anything like mine, you'll get quite a bit of fluid shooting out at the initial breakthrough.

Fuck..its so painful just touching the thing is like 'being kicked in the balls' ..the pain even lingers...The whole bottom half of my nail is BLACK. And in response to J Rizz... I think I'll keep my finger actually, chopping it off will take more time to recover. I like the idea of the little jewlers drill .. don't exactly have one lying around though...And i think the average jewler probably wouldn't oblige...lol, I'd like to see theirs faces ... 'Um excuse me I would like to quickly drill a hole in the nail on my index finger'

You can also use a needle, but it will take a little longer...

Not trying to sound all macho ... but man on the job when you get paid piece work time really is money. I used a clean drill bit and wiped it off real well with an alchohol swab from my med kit then stuck it 'n my cordless and got it over with. I always rubed neosporin in the hole afterwords then put a bandiad on and was done. Took me like 5 minutes tops getting gear out doing the thing packing up and back to work.

I was all about piece work the last ten years of my working life. I had no interest in not earning while at the doc's for little stuff.

Silencer are you sure you didn't break or damage anything like a knuckle or tendon? Is it JUST the nail that was affected? If so just break out that drill index and play doc on your self. Let the little woman help ... a good women loves to fix her man up.

You're not going below the nail ... just barely puncturing the nail itself ... so no meat drilling. There are no nerves in the hard surface of the nail itself ... it'll only take a second and there's not even any pian. I always fired up the drill and set it on a surface then pushed the nail onto the spining bit till I had just enoough of a hole for the pressure to be relieved ... you'll see it happen. I did ... but I always did this right away not the next day.

Good luck silencer I hope this goes away fast.

thanks man, im gonna see how i can do it...as Im at uni and I don't have too many drills lying around..Its now day 3 and its still a bitch, and ibuprofen is doing nothing. .. I am quite sure its just the nail. Hmm Well Ill give it 2 more days and if its still like this, then i'm going to find a way to release the pressure.
    -thanks.
