    What the hell?

This trainer at my gym told me not to work my abs so much, because there "perfect." I only work them out 3 times a week, does he have any idea what he's talking about or is 3 days a week fine? When I work my abs I do twisting decline crunches (2 sets) and machine crunches (3 sets).

If the trainer says "they're perfect", maybe he's suggesting that you spend the time and energy working on other parts that are not so good.

There are tons of guys in the gym with big arms, no back and stork legs and they waste their time training arms every workout.

In a book I own, "Arnold's Bodybuilding for men", Arnold Schwarzenegger says that you should train abs every day, because they are small muscles, and they recover alot quicker.

I train my abs every day, and I'm fine.

(The book is very old, however, and I'm not too sure how accurate this advice is today.)

So by that reasoning you should train biceps every day too.
What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

Alot of what Arnold advocated had to be taken with a grain of salt because he was coming from the perspective of a steroid based trainer. He also said one should train 5, 6, 7 days a week, which a natural trainer could not possibly ever recover from. We know now that the body grows while it RESTS, not while it is in the gym. I was a 20 something in the 80s who trained by Arnold's mantra and I know now why I never got any bigger and felt perpetually overtrained. Now I train 3, at most 4 days a week, am 20 years older (and thus producing much less testoterone) and am NOW am GAINING pounds of pure muscle each year.

And I also go back to my original premise as to why one would train such a strong bodypart so frequently anyway? Its not like the abs are suddenly going to go away if you train them once or twice a week rather than 3 times. Mike Matarazzo is genetically blessed with the biggest calves in bodybuilding. Do you think he needs to train them 3 days a week?

Did I misunderstand your post, or did you just say you were 20 something in the 80's, and now you're 20? wtf? If it's a typo, I understand, but if it's not, please explain.

    Thanks for the info, too.

Different muscles have different recovery times. Biceps don't recover as fast as abs and calves, for example.

Why are abs and calves faster at recovery? Is it because they are used more frequently outside the gym?

I do think certain muscles respond better to more frequency because of their inherent fiber types and very high level of functionality. Most notably: calves, abs, lower back, and forearms/grip. You are almost constantly using these muscles throughout the day.

I train abs daily and am pretty sure my abs are "above average."

You wear an Under Armour shirt to the gym? Are you going there to show off for the babes or get bigger and stronger?

I rarely see girls at my gym, and I wear under armor because loose fitting shirts get in the way sometimes.
