help! my lower legs are shot!

hey, ive started running hard last wednesday (thanks to the army ) but im having some severe lower leg pains. friday morning at physical training i ran my ass off. im not a runner so running for those 40 minutes was hell for me, i ran twice as far as i ever have before. when i got done, my lower legs were killing me, my calves and my tibialis (the muscle up front by the shin) were on fire.

i was told that i should run 1 mile each day this weekend to keep up, but skipped saturday due to being extremely sore. so i ran tonight, just a little over a mile, but now my legs feel pain that theyve never felt before. i cant believe how bad it is, its the same kind of pain as when a needle hits your muscle wrong, just a sharp radiating pain throughout. i can barely walk, and forget stairs, theyre near impossible.

ive been icing and using a heating pad, as well as taking 4 advil at a time, but im not getting much relief. any ideas?

btw its not M1T afaik, as ive been off that since the ban.
    cutting sucks.

I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

Sounds like shin splints, buddy. I used to get them during basketball season in high school. You can either train through them, or take it easy. Taking it easy will definitely let them heal faster, but in the army it might not be an option to "take it easy." (It wasn't in basketball, either. )

There is not much you can do as far as treatment, because shin splints are when the tibialis muscle slightly separates from the tibia bone due to stress it's not used to. They will go away eventually, and it shouldn't bother you much again unless you have a long layoff.

Some people are more prone to them than others.

As far as treatment, I told someone this is another thread:
Get a hand or a dish towel and lay it flat on the ground. At one end of the towel, scrunch your toes so the towel bunches up under your feet. Continue this until you reach the other end of the towel. Do that a few times. Supposedly it helps to accelerate the healing of that muscle.

Hope this helps, man. I definitely know how much these suck. Good luck to you.

Maybe not...many of times you go through a training program many months before your boot camp. It takes place at a local fitness center in which recruiters or military personel train you for the upcoming activities you will need to go through. Sort of like a conditioning program so you don't die out in boot camp b/c you are not use to working out type deal.

Yes, ice it, and I'd do those towel exercises I suggested. Other than that, just train through it. The pain will fade away over time.

Yes I would say ice it...directly after for 20 on 40 off....perform that several time but you should also try an ice bath. This is more of a preventative method just to keep the pain from re-occuring.

You'll live, man. It's just discomfort from overuse. Ice them for 20 minutes each day. If you guys run in formation, make sure you're using the correct stride. That is you should land on your heels. Don't run on your tippy toes even if the pace is slow.
