In a squat your back stays in relatively the same position more or less. With a deadlift you are bending your back to lower the weight and then standing up straight. It does work the hams, and glutes, but also hits the back. I feel that of all the exercises for strength and size the deadlift is the best. I love the feeling I get. I only do 5 sets at 225 but I feel it every where.
