I use to do Muy Thai. It's fun, but don't kid yourself, it's brutal.
I was thinking of learning how to kickbox. It's great exercise and i figured it's something else that will keep me on my toes diet and exercise wise, what do you guys think? would it interfere with my weight lifting at all... gains wise?

Do you think you gonna like it? Most people canīt handle martial arts.
i've done karate in the past but stopped due to a busy schedule (that was a few years ago tho) i would do karate again, but it just wasnt challenging enough, i want something more intense but not as intense as Muy Thai (i've seen that shit)

If you didn't find martial arts to be challenging, one or more of the following is likely the reason:Originally Posted by Premiere

3. The style of martial art (Tae Bo is not a martial art)

Did you ever kick trees to toughen up your shins? My friend use to do that, I think he watched that van dam movie way too much.Originally Posted by cfs3

No I didn't, but it's not just in the movies. People do that for real. It's either kick the tree or have someone beat your shins with a bamboo stick.

Used to do Karate and I loved it. Great cardio! Though, I wasn't weight training back then. Just got a workout from the warmups they made us do before class. It wasn't real challenging. If I had time i'd like to take something like kickboxing.

MMA Premier. Nothing else comes close. Every method and technique is open for study and the training is intense. As far as how it will impact your normal training that would be up to you. Intensity is at your control. Will MMA training take away from weight training? Not if you have the time to do both. The only drawback would be if you're on a bulking cycle ... this is some serious cardio we're talking.
I did it and never had any problems except for injuries. I received a broken rib while training ... that'll slow anyone down some. My increase in agility and stamina were extreme though.
I train with my son at home now. Last week I had a bloody nose and this week a slight shiner. My boy is taller and longer of arm than I am but I out power and out think him. For now ... he's 17 and growing![]()
I love MMA, what style did you concentrate on for grappling?Originally Posted by BoneCrusher

I found a dojo in LA in '84 that took a cross between Ju-Jitso and Greco roman and tied it in with a couple of the traditional stand ups. I stayed with the guy for a good while because I liked the freedom his way of doing things offered. All this was before MMA had a name and long before UFC made it popular. The guy that ran it was just a natural that had cross trained his way through a zillion dif styles. He never advertised or claimed anything particular ... he just showed us how to tie in stand-up and ground work. If you asked him what he taught he just said "Street Fighting". He had off the wall submission hold~take down combos that were cool once you learned 'em but sucked if he used you as a teacher's aid
The cool thing about MMA is the advantage a person with a high strength to weight ratio has over his opponent. Raw power on the ground takes away the advantages a faster guy could use against you while on his feet. Given equal speed you have a larger arsenal at your disposal then someone who has not added the power that weight training provides.
As far as the advantages for you in your weight training Premier you will gain a greater range of motion and a higher degree of flexibility with MMA than if you just hit the steel. You will aquire a much better sense of coordination from head to toe and your overall speed will increase if you train seriously.
You aslo learn how to control your anger Premier ... not that you need that ...![]()
I found that when I was doing Tae Kwon Do and then started doing weight training on top of it I had some serious burnout, this is well before I started learning about overtraining and overtaxing your cns,but the weight I lost was astounding, also the instructors told me to do exercises with only my bodyweight and witch me in my infinite wisdom didn't listen
Every setback is a learning experience, but first you have to see the lesson
mma seems a lil too extreme lol ... mixed martial arts right?? yea i went to a site and looked at it uhhhhh, that's not even offered here tho! so yeah, the kickboxing classes are $100 a month or $139 a month down here, 3 kickboxing classes a week, then 2 self defense classes and then 2 tae kwon do classes. Shit i just wanna learn to box honestly and i want something that will give me a good workout in the process

I did Tae Kwon Do before and started on it some 4 years back. One belt to go... BLACK (next year). I strongly recommend it.
Will be doing 3 months of body building this summer (NO TKD). My TKD training during that phase will be at home for the most part. I am hoping for bigger arms and stronger cut abs.
Cheers... D2
I wrestled in high school and college. During the season, I train with my old high school team as the coach lives 3 houses down from me. Wrestling always has been and always will be 6 minutes of hell. Also, my cousin was on the boxing team and we spar all the time. They are both great cardio. I get the best workout on Fridays when we have a "King of the Mat" free-for-all.

Whatever you decide to study, make sure you get in the ring and fight at LEAST twice. Nothing annoys me more when I meet a guy who says, "I'm a kickboxer" yet the most he's done is kick the bag and hit some focus mitts.
