    Behind The Back Shrugs

Is this a safe exercise? Does it force the shoulder into a position that is too unnatural?

    Thanks for any advice!

I like to do them on a smith machine, because I find it hard to hold the weight behind me.

Oh I love these!! Kind of have to do a half shrug/upright row to make it really effective. Nothing hits the rear/middle traps better! These are also great supersetted with regular uprights or regular shrugs.

Ya, I save rear shrugs for last, too. I do 3 sets of dumbell, 2 front barbell, then 2 rear barbell. The ROM is pretty limited, but you will learn the best way to get the most out of it quick enough. I don't think I would be able to do them at all without straps, though.

I think they're okay. I personally prefer DB shrugs, either seated or standing. But that's just me.

Well, the behind the back shrugs hit a different part of the muscle than DB shrugs. BTBS really bring out the lower trap area in the mid back.

Oh geez, I don't remember. It was from a leading doctor involved in neurology...I guess I took the quote down and forgot to include the source. I thought the entire time that I had it after the quote. I'll look it up for you.

the lower traps depress the scapula. the upper traps raise it. I don't think I understand what you are saying? Unless I am misreading your reply.

The BTBS brings out thickness in the mid back area....this is the mid, not lower traps (I was being a bit too broad in my last description), and the rhomboids. They also bring out the traps in the upper area where they "sit" on top of the scapula area of the back.
